Jimmy Reed signed with Chicago's Vee-Jay Records in 1953 and he stayed with the label for nearly a dozen years, during a decade where blues had its last great run as a hit singles medium. Reed was partially responsible for the golden age of blues hits on the R&B charts in the '50s, racking up nine Billboard R&B Top 10 singles between 1955 and 1961. All the hits, along with their flipsides – and, sometimes, the spoken introduction not released on a 45 – are here on this magnificent triple-disc set from Craft Recordings.

Jimmy Reed's lazy drawl, high harmonica sound, and tightly constructed blues songs are part of the bedrock of American roots music. For a decade in the late 1950s and early 1960s, he was the most popular blues artist in America, crossing over to the pop charts with songs like 'Big Boss Man' and 'Baby What You Want Me to Do.' Blues, country and R&B artists, including Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, Etta James and Elvis Presley, have covered his compositions. Here are his complete Vee Jay singles-his defining body of work-newly remastered with notes from Grammy-winning blues producer Scott Billington.

Studebaker John has always had one foot in the blues and one foot in rock & roll, but always liked the raw less-is-more sound that he first heard on Chicago's Maxwell St. Artists that recorded blues and R&B songs like Elvis, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed, Freddy King, Slim Harpo all had hit records played on the AM radio Top 100. Then Bob Dylan shook things up with his going electric at the Newport Folk Festival (using the Butterfield Blues Band as his back up). Then came the English bands and some of them were very good, still a raw sound, even louder and faster than before. But enough of history! This album is one for the people, 14 all new original songs called Old School Rockin'.

Long a Chicago club mainstay, Duncan sings and blows harp in the time-honored 1950s style of that city's rich blues tradition. Backed by the Rockin' Johnny Band, Duncan runs through a set of originals and old favorites that proves that there's still a few of the old timers left who can deliver the goods. Duncan's harp is replaced by Martin Lang on three tracks and Eddie Taylor Jr. takes over the guitar chores on two tunes, and is particularly effective on "Tribute to Jimmy Reed." Although some of Little Arthur's originals skirt the issue of copyright and his timing is suspect in spots, this is one fine album of journeyman blues sung and played with a whole lot of feeling.

Authentic 50s Blues and Jump Blues by one of Germany's finest bands! Led by the British harp player and singer Roger Wade and driven by the energetic performance of guitarist T-Man Michalka, whom I regard one of the finest in Europe, the combo's delivering a set of SIX originals, and some fine covers of songs originally by Roy Milton, Willie Nix, Jimmy Reed and others! Brilliant.

It took a longtime for Leadfoot to become the artist he is today. Others like Rimbaud or Bob Dylan seem to bloom and get their full maturity all of a sudden and either shortly after stop to create or perpetuate the same form for ever.

Celebrating sixty years since the launch of one of the most successful independent record labels in US Popular music. Received wisdom would have us believe that before Motown, no black-owned record company had made a significant impact on the US mainstream. However, the actuality is something else entirely. Way back in the early 50s, long before Berry Gordy had written his first song, VEE-JAY RECORDS - a black, family owned and run, Chicago-based label - was establishing itself via a steady stream of Blues, R&B, DooWop and Gospel hits.
