As overworked a phrase as `Beatlesque' is, it nonetheless fittingly describes the sound of the Knickerbockers, one of the many American groups smitten by the English sound in the mid-60s. But it ought to be argued that rather than simply being Beatle imitators, the Knickerbockers were in fact the first great `powerpop' combo, in that they played concise, melodic rock with power.
One listen to this compilation should convince even the most skeptical observer of that fact. The group made their name in the early part of their career with their ability to sound like other people, but once they hit their stride with the material presented here, the Knickerbockers came into their own as purveyors of classic (and timeless) 60s pop…

Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for violin, viola, and orchestra is one of his greatest masterpieces. It was a joy and an honour to record Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante.
Dittersdorf Symphony Concertante in D major for viola and double bass written circa 1775. The viola and the double bass are certainly the two most unreasonably neglected soloists among the orchestral strings; to pair them in a sinfonia concertante may well in the first place have been a charitable idea on Dittersdorf's part.

Lonesome Sundown (his real name was Cornelius Green) had a little bit more Delta and Chicago blues in him than most of his Louisiana labelmates who recorded for producer J.D. Miller. Not that Sundown's sound isn't solidly in the so-called swamp blues tradition, but where Slim Harpo, Silas Hogan, and the other Excello artists worked from a laconic, Jimmy Reed-like shuffle, Sundown quickened the pace (at least for an Excello act) to a nastier level, and with Miller's reverb-laden production, ended up sounding a little bit like Jimmy Reed on speed, particularly on tracks like "Don't Go." Not that Lonesome Sundown couldn't do the patented Louisiana blues shuffle when he chose to, as his signature tune, "I'm a Mojo Man," shows, or even improve on the pattern, as with the loose-limbed and brilliant "I'm a Samplin' Man," but he seemed most at home doing more standard blues fare like the modern-sounding "My Home Is a Prison"…

This best-of basically covers the years 1979 to 1994, though it reaches back to 1964 for Marianne Faithfull's first recording and first hit, "As Tears Go By," and includes "She," slated for the upcoming 1995 album A Secret Life. Five of the 11 songs are drawn from Faithfull's strongest album, 1979's Broken English, including the bitter title track and "Why'd Ya Do It." Otherwise, compiler Chris Blackwell makes little attempt to present a balance among Faithfull's recordings – there is nothing at all from Dangerous Acquaintances or A Child's Adventure, and only one track each from Strange Weather and Blazing Away. But there is a good newly recorded cover of Patti Smith's "Ghost Dance" co-produced by Keith Richards and featuring other members of the Rolling Stones, and Blackwell rescues Faithfull's rendition of the title theme for the movie Trouble in Mind from the soundtrack album. It adds up to an excellent compilation that highlights Faithfull's strengths as a singer.

Pal Waaktaar and Magne Furuholmen, formerly of Bridges, formed Norwegian synth pop group a-ha in the early '80s. Nimble vocalist Morten Harket joined the duo, and they left for the now "legendary London flat" (so called because of its state of disrepair) to make it. By late 1983 they had achieved part of that goal by signing to WEA. Their debut single, "Take On Me," went through three versions before becoming a hit in the U.K., eventually reaching number two in November 1985. It went one better in the U.S., mainly due to the wide exposure of its stunning video on MTV, which fused animation with real-life action. They returned to the charts with "The Sun Always Shines on T.V." which became a U.K. number one in early 1986, helping take the album Hunting High and Low to the Top Ten. The song hit the Top 20 in the U.S., where the album reached number 15.
