Few others besides avant-garde composer/instrumentalist Elliott Sharp could record a collection of blues songs and make them sound like a new genre altogether, a sort of blues/folk/jazz/new age sound with droning keyboards, slinky reverbed vocals, sinuous guitar parts, and angstful horns. The album is by turns haunting, sexy, volatile, and soothing

Zuhour (flowers in Arabic) is an album of improvised pieces by the duo of guitarists Ayman Fanous and Joe Morris. While firmly rooted in the free jazz idiom, the pieces veer into unexpected territory, including flamenco and musique concrète. Both guitarists employ a wide array of techniques, from traditional plectrum approaches to fingerstyle and extended techniques.

One may imagine Ludwig von Beethoven in the 1820s in ill health and nearly deaf, bitter and lonely with his economy in tatters, and clinging to his delusions of nobility.

Last summer in Elliott Sharp’s recording studio in Manhattan, New York guitarist Sharp spent a day with guitar colleague Mary Halvorson and another with Marc Ribot, legendary guitarist of Tom Waits, The Lounge Lizards and Marianne Faithful. The result was a series of recordings that could only be created by friends. They represent the great art of guitar playing by three exceptional musicians looking for new sonic adventures in search of the sound of our time. “I hear in their playing both a step into an unknown future and wild growth from a deep past,” says Elliott Sharp. “The contradiction is resolved in improvisation – the transcendent sonic path of the now.”

Mathematics and the various sciences are just ordered ways of looking at and analyzing all of the raw data supplied by the universe. It's all about mappings and correspondences. At the same time, my work often takes a speculative and irrational/intuitive approach. It includes both the ordered and rational, the intuitive and irrational, and the acoustics of the ear. - Elliott Sharp

Recorded and originally released in 1996, Rheo-Umbra is a two-part composition by Elliott Sharp for a typically bizarre ensemble consisting of electric harp, electric bass, two bass clarinets, percussion, sampler, string quartet, and electric guitar (along with the Slab, a somewhat guitarish instrument invented by Sharp himself). The first six minutes of "Rheo-Umbra 1" are built on a repetitive theme that is carried by the string quartet and muttered about, commented upon, subtly undermined and sometimes supported by the others.

The first Aggregat edition was a rather conventional trio with a hard bop matrix, something very unusual when the leader is someone like Elliott Sharp. Yes, the guitarist who, in “Sharp? Monk? Sharp! Monk!”, brought back Thelonious Monk’s jazz to the avant-garde, but is generally committed to a syncretic mix of urban idioms going from blues and rock to contemporary writing and experimental procedures. In that first recording, titled as the name of the present band, he played mostly saxophones (tenor and soprano) and bass clarinet, only occasionally fingering his first instrument.
