No! With its reinterpretations of the music composed by Thelonious Monk, "Sharp? Monk? Sharp! Monk!" wasn't the most "jazzy" recording that multi-instrumentalist Elliott Sharp could conceive. In "Aggregat" we find him (in a way similar to his soundtrack to the film "Spectropia") using this musical language as if he always did it in such an integral and authentic way. Choosing the tenor and soprano saxophones as principal vehicles of expression (only sometimes do we hear his trademark electric guitar), what we have here is rhythmic and melodic jazz with a twist, in which improvisation expands from both written scores and conceptual approaches.

Last summer in Elliott Sharp’s recording studio in Manhattan, New York guitarist Sharp spent a day with guitar colleague Mary Halvorson and another with Marc Ribot, legendary guitarist of Tom Waits, The Lounge Lizards and Marianne Faithful. The result was a series of recordings that could only be created by friends. They represent the great art of guitar playing by three exceptional musicians looking for new sonic adventures in search of the sound of our time. “I hear in their playing both a step into an unknown future and wild growth from a deep past,” says Elliott Sharp. “The contradiction is resolved in improvisation – the transcendent sonic path of the now.”

“Working with forces unknown to me has always been an exciting challenge,” says Elliott Sharp, “especially when those forces are in the form of younger musicians, highly skilled and enthusiastic.” For his work with the musicians of the Veni Academy, he chose three previously composed works that would be easily adaptable to a large ensemble whose instrumentation was not the result of prior design plus one newly composed for the occasion. The chosen pieces were based on well-defined processes that made use of instant decision-making on the part of both the players and the conductor, and finally, some graphic notation. Composed in 2003 for string quartet, The Dispersion of Seeds uses a simple algorithm of arpeggiation of nine chords throughout its arc to create shifting verticalities. The piece would be different with every performance yet would retain its distinct identity.

O'Rourke and Sharp first met in Chicago in 1989 and their paths have crossed many times since then with a number of collaborations in Japan including guitar trios with Otomo Yoshihide and large algorithmic orchestras. This set of electroacoustic duos was performed in an intimate setting in Kofu, Japan in 2019 with O'Rourke using synthesizers and electronics and Sharp on bass clarinet,Strandberg Boden 8-string, and electronics. The sound ranges from quiet intensity to swirling turbulence unmoored from genre and style.

The Hudson River Compositions were generated in 1973-74 when I was living in Germantown, NY overlooking the river. Summer evenings were often spent on the back porch watching the myriad fireflies with the expectation that at any second, they would spell out words, cohere into pictures or even form music notation. Walking along the Hudson, I could find secluded places to practice soprano sax and derive inspiration from watching the flow. Sunrise on the river (witnessed from either end of the day) might reveal thousands of birds taking off simultaneously, the air so thick that foreground and background were reversed, a living Escher drawing, the sound symphonic and granulated. Appropriate found images were later superimposed on music manuscript. These graphics combined with a number of conceptual instruction sets comprised the score. This new recording is a collage of overdub sessions, some with synchronized listening, some autonomous, an attempt to manifest the sound I was hearing in my Inner Ear at the time of the conception of these compositions. Joe Morris is chasing William Parker for the right to be the whore of the New York jazz scene. He's been popping up everywhere lately, establishing himself as one of the leaders of avant-garde jazz guitar. Mat Maneri, son of microtonal composer Joe Maneri, is an electric violinist who played on a track of Morris's recent Cloud of Black Birds album (also on Aum Fidelity). This disc pairs the two for over an hour of free improvisation.
