360° Hugo Wolf. The title says it all. Daniel Johannsen and Andreas Fröschl present an exquisite selection of art songs from Wolf’s extensive oeuvre. Combined with the sound of the contemporary grand piano by Carl Rönisch (1872), these songs are distilled into a unique, fascinating essence of the art of Lied of the late Romantic period.

CANTATAS AND OPERAS – the twin pillars of secular vocal music of the baroque period. Few composers – though there are some notable exceptions – eschewed these genres if only because a set of cantatas, engraved or copied professionally and strategically dedicated, could be a comparatively inexpensive starting point for a career while opera lured with prospects of fame and fortune.

The harpsichordist and conductor Alexander Grychtolik and the top Belgian ensemble Il Gardellino present here on PASSACAILLE an attempt to reconstruct the Passion oratorio BWV Anh. 169, which Bach began around 1725 but then
abandoned or had to abandon. This recording is intended to show that with Picander's free Passion poem, the composer must also have planned his own contribution to the then extremely popular genre of the freely composed Passion oratorio. Numerous detailed questions about the work will probably remain unanswered forever. In the spirit of artistic experimentation, however, this version is intended to explore a new aspect of Bach's Passion aesthetics.

A composition as brilliant as it is protean – the earliest sections date back to 1724, others were written in 1733 in the hope of obtaining a post in Dresden – the Mass in B minor occupied Bach until the end of his life. The work, which is more ecumenical than strictly Catholic, offers a digest of his art at its expressive peak: a world in itself. It is an understatement to say that the performers on this recording were eager to revisit it, following their acclaimed interpretations of the two Passions and the Christmas Oratorio.
