A towering musical figure of the 20th century, saxophonist John Coltrane reset the parameters of jazz during his decade as a leader. At the outset, he was a vigorous practitioner of hard bop, gaining prominence as a sideman for Miles Davis before setting out as a leader in 1957, when he released Coltrane on Prestige and Blue Train on Blue Note.

John Coltrane's "Live At The Half Note" on the Laserlight label is an excellent look at what is arguably jazz's greatest quartet - the "Classic Quartet" of Trane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones - in an intimate club setting. It is during performances like these, where Coltrane had the ability to stretch out and play at length, improvising and creating on the spur of the moment, that he further developed his signature, searching style.

Alice Coltrane's landmark Journey to Satchidananda reveals just how far the pianist and widow of John Coltrane had come in the three years after his death. The compositions here are wildly open and droning figures built on whole tones and minor modes. And while it's true that one can definitely hear her late husband's influence on this music, she wouldn't have had it any other way. Pharoah Sanders' playing on the title cut, "Shiva-Loka," and "Isis and Osiris" (which also features the Vishnu Wood on oud and Charlie Haden on bass) is gloriously restrained and melodic. Coltrane's harp playing, too, is an element of tonal expansion as much as it is a modal and melodic device…

CLASSIC 1973 BROADCAST RECORDING FROM THE LOVE, DEVOTION, SURRENDER TOUR 1973 was a transformative year for both Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin, as they each entered periods of musical and spiritual change. Santana, following the enormous success that his ensemble achieved in the wake of their breakthrough performance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969, now wanted his recently found interest in the philosophy of Guru Sri Chinmoy, to be reflected in his music. Likewise, McLaughlin, a devotee of Chinmoy s too, wished for similar results. In a joint attempt to reflect their desires, in July 73 the pair released Love, Devotion, Surrender, an album inspired by Chinmoy s teachings, dedicated to John Coltrane. The record peaked at number seven on the UK album chart and at 14 on the Billboard 200, impressive feats considering its challenging nature. The album consisted of two John Coltrane covers, a traditional folk song, and a pair of McLaughlin originals. The duo subsequently toured together across the USA and Canada in 1973 and 1974, accompanied by a handful of world class musicians, including Billy Cobham on drums and the pioneering organist Larry Young, both of whom had appeared on the LP. On 1st September 73 the band played The International Amphitheater, Chicago, IL, a show which was recorded for a live FM broadcast in the United States. Featuring numbers from Love, Devotion, Surrender, plus a couple of rarities, in completion this performance provides for a veritable masterclass in improvisation and musicianship.

Despite its title (which was due to the original LP containing the last of Prestige's John Coltrane material to be released for the first time), this album does not have Coltrane's final recordings either of his career or for Prestige. These "leftovers" are generally rewarding with an alternate take of "Trane's Slo Blues" (called "Slotrane") being joined by three slightly later numbers ("Lover," "By the Numbers" and "Come Rain or Come Shine") taken from quintet sessions with trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and either Louis Hayes or Art Taylor on drums. Enjoyable if not essential hard bop from John Coltrane's productive Prestige period.

The Heavyweight Champion is a box set that lives up to its title. Collecting all of John Coltrane's Atlantic recordings, including a fair number of unreleased takes as well as an entire disc of alternate tracks and studio chatter, the seven-disc box set documents a pivotal moment in Coltrane's career, as he was moving from hard bop and sweet standards to a more daring, experimental style of playing influenced by the avant-garde. Much of the music is hard bop (Giant Steps) or lushly melodic (My Favorite Things), but the latter discs show the saxophonist coming to terms with the more experimental movements in jazz. The scope of this music is, quite simply, breathtaking – not only was Coltrane developing at a rapid speed, but the resulting music encompasses nearly every element that made him a brilliant musician, and it is beautiful.
