After the 'Plus près de vous' tour came to an end, Johnny wanted to keep a memory of his reunion with Bercy, where he had not sung for 15 years. The last two dates of December 20 and 21 are captured but the images remain blocked. Deprived of this recording, fans demonstrate, going so far as to draft a petition gathering several thousand signatures. That went unanswered - until now!

Thereafter he signed with Geffen Records and recorded the considerably more accessible Still Life (Talking), which won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance. This superb set was recorded at the close of 1987 for broadcast on WXRT FM, and features several cuts from that LP, as well as a handful of other classics, and is presented here together with background notes and images.

AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic Album series with a re-mastered 2CD release from Johnny Griffin, complete with original artwork, liner notes and personnel details. Hard bop pioneer Johnny Griffin began his prolifically dynamic jazz career by playing the much more sedate instruments, the clarinet and oboe! Before long however he had switched to the alto sax and was playing with no less a musician than T Bone Walker when he was just 15 years old! At 17, in 1945 he had joined Lionel Hampton’s band and it was the great vibes-man who persuaded him to take up the tenor sax.

Among Thelonious Monk's brilliant musical associations, the one with tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin sometimes gets overlooked. This 1958 recording catches the quartet with bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik and drummer Roy Haynes on its home turf, New York's Five Spot Cafe. Griffin's gruffly compressed sound and high-speed, coiling lines are a fine foil for Monk's spare and pointed comping, bringing a distinct and special intensity to Monk's music. Together the group turns in classic renditions of familiar Monk tunes, including a brilliant Griffin performance of "Blue Monk".
