Johnny Mathis is one of the few classic artists whose names have become synonymous with the holidays. He practically owns "Marshmallow World," for instance. The silky smooth crooner has released at least one new Christmas album every decade since his '50s hit-making heyday. His first entry of the 2000s may not be the best choice for the uninitiated, but anyone who's loved his Christmas music in the past surely won't be disappointed. Mathis's voice has matured, but that tenor is still beautiful, as he delivers his usual mix of carols and pop standards. Like so many other Christmas artists, Mathis is at his best when he's covering the already familiar: "Frosty the Snowman" and "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas" pop like Sinatra here, making up for the rather unmemorable "Heavenly Peace". That voice, though, has always been an instrument of romance and fantasy, two elements that blend perfectly with the holiday spirit.

"The Christmas Music of Johnny Mathis: A Personal Collection" contains 14 highlights culled from the many holiday albums Johnny Mathis recorded for Columbia records over the years. Even though the collection spans several decades, it's remarkably consistent because Mathis' style stayed essentially the same, no matter what the current fads may have been. Also, the collection is strong simply because the compilers have selected many great performances, including "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas," "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," "Silver Bells" and "Sleigh Ride." It comes close to being the definitive Mathis Christmas compilation, even if it's not necessarily the definitive Mathis Christmas album.

"Merry Christmas" is the first Christmas album by American pop singer Johnny Mathis and was released by Columbia Records on October 6, 1958. The selections are a mix of traditional Christmas carols ("Silent Night", "O Holy Night", "The First Noel") and holiday hits ("The Christmas Song", "White Christmas", "Silver Bells"). The album debuted on Billboard magazine's list of the 25 Best-Selling Pop LPs in the US in its December 15, 1958, issue and got as high as #3 during its initial four-week run. It made additional appearances there each holiday season from 1959 to 1962 and on the magazine's Christmas Albums and Pop Catalog Albums charts in subsequent years. It received Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of 500,000 copies in the US in December 1960 and in 2013 ranked as one of the top selling Christmas albums of all time with five million copies sold.

"For Christmas" is a latter-day holiday album from Johnny Mathis. Since it was recorded during the '80s, the production techniques aren't as warm and inviting as his classic '50s and '60s recordings; it isn't quite as endearing, even if his voice has lost very little of its famous smooth suppleness. For dedicated fans, it's worth hearing, but only after they've exhausted his Christmas records from the '50s, '60s, and '70s.

The Ultimate Christmas Album, Vol. 5 collects more pop and rock holiday tunes, this time venturing further into the '70s and '80s with songs like Paul McCartney & Wings' "Wonderful Christmastime," Hall & Oates' "Jingle Bell Rock," and Barry Manilow's "It's Just Another New Year's Eve." The collection still features traditional pop chestnuts, including Dean Martin's "A Marshmallow World," Johnny Mathis' "The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You)," and Andy Williams' "Sleigh Ride," but this volume's overall feel is more contemporary than classic. Other highlights include Manhattan Transfer's "A Christmas Love Song," the Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping," the Tokens' "Little Drummer Boy," and the Jackson 5's "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus." If The Ultimate Christmas Album, Vol. 5 isn't necessarily the most coherent volume in the series, it's certainly one of the most interesting.
