From the spellbinding majesty of the Alhambra to the thunderous war machine called Conquistadores, Jon Mark has again captured the soul and spirit of a people in his music. The Alhambra was at one time the royal city/fortress of the Moors, looking down over Spanish Granada, with numerous and wonderful palaces, courtyards, fountains, and splenderous gardens. It was built over the course of centuries, and became the birthplace of countless legends of opulence, mighty rulers, intrigue, and romance. As in The Standing Stones of Callanish and Land of Merlin, Jon Mark weaves ancient melodies and rhythms into his electronic tapestry, this time portraying the elegance and grandeur of medieval Spain. With classical guitar accents, sounds of harp, trumpet, and the hot desert wind adding vivid colorings, Alhambra is yet another haunting soundtrack to give wings to ever-nomadic imaginations.

Jon Mark – born Jon Michael Biurchell – was already known on the music scene in England in the mid-'60s as a guitarist and arranger of some skill. It was in this capacity that he took on the task of arranging the music of Marianne Faithfull – a neophyte singer at the time – for recording and performance. Although many of her commercial releases had a heavily produced sound, a result of Mike Leander's excessive productions, the more subtle aspects of Mark's work came through on some of them, especially her more folk-oriented repertory; his subtle, less-is-more approach worked well for Faithfull, with her limited range but expressive voice. Additionally, his work as a guitarist was prominent on her live appearances on the BBC, for which he was frequently her principal accompanist – but, of course, this limited his exposure to U.K. listeners. He also worked occasionally during this period with a classmate from school, virtuoso guitarist Alun Davies, and the two ultimately cut a single together called "Relax Your Mind," for the Deram label.

It is true that part of this LP is fantastic and part just OK, but the fantastic is just unique. Johnny Almond's sax and flute are just superb in every way on the 'City' side. The Ghetto is a marvel and it goes on from there.

In 1988, New Zealand composer, Jon Mark, paid tribute to his Celtic roots on The Standing Stones of Callanish. These elegant synthesizer sketches capture the mystery and the simple beauty of the British Isles.
On this release, Mark delves even deeper into his English heritage as he takes listeners on a musical tour through the Land of Merlin. Cornwall, the most westerly part of the British Isles, has from time immemorial been known as the Land of Merlin. As King Arthur's birthplace and home to his fabled Knights of the Round Table, it has inspired countless artists and storytellers through the ages. Mark is no different. Much of his childhood was spent traveling through the enchanted landscapes of Cornwall with his godparents, and the memory of these journeys continue to inspire the English-born synthesist.

Off the northwest coast of Scotland on the Isle of Lewis, rise the Standing Stones of Callanish. The main ring of these stones is often called the Scottish Stonehenge. The importance and purpose of the stones is not known. Theories suggests possibilities such as a transducer for healing energy, an astronomical observatory, a place of sun-moon worship, or an entryway to places that exist in Celtic myth.

Jon Mark uses his electronic keyboards to produce a CD filled with incredibly evocative music. The melancholy and reflection that flow through every song on this recording are indicative of the time of year when trees go bare, the air grows cold, and winter begins to appear. Some of the songs are tinged with bittersweet memories, others are more minor-key and somber.
