Finally! The only Planet of the Apes score to not have an album of its own finally does! Jerry Goldsmith returned for the third film in Twentieth Century Fox's Planet of the Apes saga. For Franklin J. Schaffner's original classic, Goldsmith wrote one of the all-time GREAT films scores. Remarkable in every way and truly groundbreaking, there was no topping what he had done previously. So Jerry Goldsmith did what he always did in that situation… he wrote something completely new! And once again he soared! For Escape From The Planet of the Apes (1971) Jerry miraculously brought Planet of the Apes to the 1970s and gave it a groove! That's not to say his original score didn't have plenty of groove itself, but in a very different way. Here he added an electric guitar, a steel drum and a sitar to his orchestra! And what fun it all was! Previously available only as an abbreviated "bonus track" on our own Planet of the Apes CD, this release of the complete score from Escape From The Planet of the Apes finally plugs one of the of the most important holes in Jerry Goldsmith's discography.

John Barry's sinister score from the 1984 suspense thriller, Mike's Murder. Often overlooked in Barry's career, this is one of those rare chances to listen to the late maestro write some powerful material. Very stylish and highly recommended.

Just David Newman's third film score, The Kindred is a work of surprising sophistication and maturity, especially given the lowbrow origins of its creature-feature subject. Newman's macabre interpretation of classical traditions and deft fusion of orchestral and electronic elements create a palpable sense of drama and dread – his themes unfold like black orchids in bloom, with simple, foreboding melodies that build to dizzying eruptions of sound. While largely forgoing substance for style, The Kindred does offer several glimpses of Newman's emerging hallmarks. In particular, the chilling "Transformation" employs atonal string effects and dissonant woodwinds rooted in modernist sensibilities, anticipating the harmonic complexity of film scores to come.

For his superb and terrifying film, the filmmaker William Friedkin finds in the catalog of the Virgin label, the main theme of his Exorcist, an instrumental track that the British Mike Oldfield had previously composed for his album Tubular Bells. The filmmaker completes his soundtrack with various classic pieces by Anton Webern but above all Krzysztof Penderecki, surprisingly all in phase with his fantastic tale. Choices that played an essential role in the ultimate success of this great horror classic.

Alex North had his roots in the American stage but achieved his greatest fame in the epic film genre: his scores for Spartacus (1960), Cleopatra (1963) and The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965) are beloved for their scope and grandeur. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) was to be another North epic but ended up with Stanley Kubrick's selections of classical music. Later in 1968 North was able to use some of his 2001 ideas in M-G-M's The Shoes of the Fisherman, a colossal modern-day tale about the first Russian Pope. The Shoes of the Fisherman was based on a novel by Morris L. West and starred Anthony Quinn as Kiril Lakota, a political prisoner who rejoins the Vatican after his release. When the Pope dies, Kiril emerges as an unlikely successor, and must set the course for the Vatican's role in a current world crisis. The film also starred Laurence Olivier as the Soviet Premier, David Janssen as an American journalist, and Oskar Werner as a Jesuit philosopher and friend of Kiril's.
