With West Coast jump blues and boogie-woogie piano. Featuring Charlie Musselwhite, The Roomful of Blues Horns, Ronnie Earl. Dubbing his swinging approach "rock-a-boogie," pianist Mitch Woods and His Rocket 88s have revived the jump blues approach of the '40s and '50s. Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Mitch Woods moved to San Francisco in 1970. While he was growing up in Brooklyn, he studied both jazz and classical music, but when he relocated to the Bay Area, he primarily played jump blues and R&B. San Franciscan guitarist HiTide Harris introduced Woods to the joyous jive of Louis Jordan, and the pianist's musical tastes were transformed. Between 1970 and 1980, Woods performed as a solo artist, gigging at a number of local clubs. In 1980, he formed the Rocket 88s, featuring Harris on guitar, and four years later, the band released their debut album, Steady Date, on Blind Pig.

Named in honor of the song by bluesmen Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, acoustic funk-popsters Jump, Little Children formed at the North Carolina School of the Arts, where founding members Jay Clifford (vocals, guitar), Ward Williams (cello) and brothers Matt (harmonica, accordion, mandolin) and Evan Bivins (drums) were originally studying classical music. Influenced by a friend from Dublin, they began playing traditional Irish folk music in their spare time, increasingly drawing influence from Delta blues as well; eventually, the group quit school to focus on performing full-time, even gigging in Ireland in 1992 before returning to the U.S. and settling in Boston. There Jump, Little Children began writing and performing original material, and in the spring of 1994 they relocated to Charleston, South Carolina, adding upright bassist Jonathan Gray and building a grass-roots following through their extensive street-corner performances and club dates.

After an extended break, Ace's King Acetates Series resumes this month with a second compilation by iconic rhythm & blues man Roy Brown. Pay Day Jump focuses predominantly on the sides that Roy cut for DeLuxe records after King Records founder and boss Syd Nathan bought the label in late 1949. Hard Luck Blues, Boogie At Midnight, Love Don't Love Nobody and all of Roy's other big records for DeLuxe from the period are included all sounding better than they have ever done as they are mastered from recently-minted transfers of the original King acetates. Eight of the 24 selections are either completely unissued performances or previously unissued alternate takes, making this a must for even the most ardent Roy Brown collector.

Rock & roll exploded in the '50s onto a cultural landscape that was so uptight and repressed as to be unrecognizable today, even to those who lived through it. Everything – from the clothes young people wore to the music they listened to to the money they spent – was a hard-fought statement, because no youth group before those '50s teenagers ever had that kind of freedom and did something with it. Pop music was bland, bland, bland (just like it is now) and the bigger and badder and bolder rock & roll became, the more of a threat it was to the status-quo squares who banned it every chance they got. You couldn't listen to it, you couldn't dance to it at your school, concerts in public places were banned, and artists were often jailed for performing it in public.

Tina Bednoff & the Cocktailers is a quaint quartet from the shady red light district of Helsinki, delivering rockin’ rhythm and blues that you can dance your toenails off to. With all due respect, don't you just sometimes get tired of the endless radio playlists and the monotonic, compressed sound barrier of today’s music and artists? Have no fear, Tina and the guys are here! The sound is firmly based on 1940's & 1950's rhythm and blues, but the mission is not to replicate the hits of the past, not by a long shot.

Blues / Rock & Roll / Rhythm & Blues / Jump Blues

There is no question that Big Joe Turner rocked. He rocked harder than any jump blues bandleader, his band hitting the downbeat with a vengeance matched only by Turner’s full-throated roar. This was big-band blues in sound but not in style; it was rock & roll before there was a name for it. Bear Family’s 2011 set Rocks concentrates on his hardest-swinging R&B, leaning hard on Turner’s classic sides for Atlantic: “Roll 'Em Pete”; “Honey Hush”; “Flip, Flop and Fly”; and “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” which Bill Haley sweetened up for the first crossover rock & roll single.

Christmas Jump & Jive is one of two holiday-themed compilations included in Rod McKuen's series "Songs That Won The War." This collection is sourced primarily from radio broadcasts and transcriptions. It is a strange package: many of the selections are not holiday tunes; many are not from the 1940s, much less the war years; and some of the track titles are dubious at best: the "Quiet Christmas Riot" attributed to Buddy Rich is plain old "Quiet Riot," and Benny Goodman's "Jingle Bell Jive" is the 1935 "Jingle Bells" recorded for Victor. But buried in the filler are some rare gems: a breakneck broadcast version of Duke Ellington's "Ring Dem Bells"; a rare parody of "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" by the equally rare pairing of Bing Crosby and Ella Fitzgerald; and a broadcast performance of Nat King Cole's "Mrs. Santa Claus."

It is a tribute album to Jazz/Jump Blues saxophonist and singer Louis Jordan, and is made up entirely of covers of songs written or performed by Jordan. As well as King, the album features other famous jazz and blues musicians including Dr. John, Earl Palmer and members of Ray Charles' band.

Even for the Mosaic label, this limited-edition 12-CD box set is miraculous. Unlike most of their other efforts, this is not a "complete" set, although each of the 65 sessions covered is complete. A collection of mostly formerly rare sessions made for Capitol during its first 11 years, the music ranges from Dixieland in the Bob Crosby Bobcats manner to some swing-oriented big bands and a touch of bop. The quantity (245 selections) and the high quality are both remarkable. Included are exciting sessions by Paul Whiteman, Eddie Miller, Nappy Lamare, Ray Bauduc, Marvin Ash, Wingy Manone, Johnny Mercer, Scatman Crothers, Deane Kincaide, Armand Hug, Frankie Trumbauer (his last recordings), Pud Brown, Bud Freeman, Zutty Singleton, Bobby Hackett, Sid Catlett, Al Casey, the Capitol Jazzmen, Jack Teagarden, Anita O'Day, Ten Cats and a Mouse, the Benny Carter big band, Jess Stacy, Joe Sullivan, Mel Powell, the exciting and very underrated Cootie Williams Orchestra, Murray McEachern, Rex Stewart, Sonny Greer, Louie Bellson, Carl Kress, Kay Starr, Red Norvo and Stan Hasselgard. A remarkable and highly enjoyable set which contains many previously unreleased recordings.
