RS & Hotfile | 4 CBR | Radical Comics | Aug 12 - Nov 25 2009 | 71.3 MB Total

is a five part miniseries, released through Radical Comics with each issue containing 24 pages of story. It is written by legendary comic writer Steve Moore and features the artwork of Cris Bolson. Knives of Kush is the long-awaited sequel to Steve Moore’s previous Hercules mini-series "The Thracian Wars". A reading of "The Thracian Wars" is not at all essential to understanding the plot of the second book, but obviously it will enhance the reader’s enjoyment. Following the events that occurred in "The Thracian Wars", Hercules and his band of Greek mercenaries were traveling across the Mediterranean sea, bound for the port of Piramesse in the Nile delta, with hopes of then moving on to Memphis to seek work as mercenaries. Events led them to the land of the Pharoahs, however, and this meeting of contrasting cultures and mythos--Greek mythology juxtaposed alongside Egyptian mysticism--makes for a very interesting plot. Moore's interpretation of Hercules goes back to more ancient versions and the artwork is simply fabulous, in keeping with Radical's reputation for painted comic books. Quite good.

Altoist Richie Cole again shows us that bop not only old-fashioned, but it could be quite fun. He performs nine Dizzy Gillespie compositions (plus "You Go to My Head" which was actually co-written by Haven Gillespie) while joined by groups ranging from a two-guitar trio to a 13-piece band, all arranged in colorful fashion by Bob Belden.

Not everyone knows this, but the hardware Electra is Kush's best-selling product. I admit, I wasn't expecting that. This plugin is the first one modeled by me; the biggest challenge was the midrange filters, they're proportional-Q (like the old API's, but tighter) so the bandwidth changes with gain. They're so articulate, I can make drums sound like they were tuned and even mic'd differently.

I don't know what's more exciting: the fact that the Hammer EQ is now plugin, or the fact that this is the first of many from A-Designs Digital…by Kush. The Hammer's mythical top end sheen and tube-thickened low end quickly earned it a permanent place on mix busses around the world. Me, I've always been partial to its smooth, bite-free midrange-something that's difficult to find in any EQ, let alone in a plugin.

Renowned Montreal/Cairo-based composer Sam Shalabi returns with his exhilarating and utterly genre-bending big band Land Of Kush. The trenchantly-titled Sand Enigma is the orchestra’s long awaited fourth album - its first in six years, following 2013’s The Big Mango, Shalabi’s critically-acclaimed love letter to Cairo, written and recorded during the Arab Spring. While the intervening years have obviously been devastating and disenchanting in so many ways, Sand Enigma bristles with defiant exuberance, restless creative energy, and electrifying cross-cultural expression. The album is a wildly diverse and hugely compelling tour de force of modern composition that pulses with emotion and experimentation, blending avant-garde, psychedelic, Middle Eastern, out-jazz, electronic and improv/free music tropes to stunning effect…

It was a big deal when #KushandOrangeJuice became the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter upon the release of the eighth Wiz Khalifa mixtape in April 2010, back when “hashtags” and “trending topics” were cutting-edge promotional tools. Back then, it was practically unheard of for a rapper with no major-label deal to be making such big waves (he’d left his former label, Warner Bros., in 2009). But there was something comforting about the red-eyed Pittsburgh rapper’s laidback mode of rapping about the staples of college dorm-room chatter: weed, women, cars, parties… Did we mention weed? Today, Kush & Orange Juice is considered a “blog era” classic—a throwback to a chiller, simpler time.
