The recording session evidently began on a rough note, as alluded to several times in the liner notes. You could not guess it, though, from the music, which is a fascinating collection of tunes. Featuring El'Zabar on percussion and thumb piano, along with Hamiet Bluiett on flute, bass sax, and contra bass sax and Billy Bang on violin, the trio offers diversity galore considering the seemingly limited instrumentation. The last track features vocal doodling (scatting? jazz yodeling?) like you've never heard, and the others highlight each of the three as improvisers and composers.

It's an event when AACM members collaborate on disc. The former Art Ensemble stalwart Jarman (alto sax, flute, ) and the incendiary tenor saxophonist McIntyre team up to form a most powerful and prolific front line as you'll ever hear in creative music. Colson's rarely recorded piano, the always joyous Favors on bass, and El'Zabar's African informed percussion wizardry provide the ideal backdrop for the countless bright moments heard on this CD…

The Bluiett Baritone Saxophone Group strikes again. Four baritone saxes make for quite a wall of low-register sound, and every quartet member but Bluiett – Patience Higgins, James Carter, and Alex Harding – doubles on bass clarinet. In Carter's case, make that contra-bass clarinet, an instrument that can cause the room to shake. Since the horns have the bass function covered, all that's needed are drums; hence the presence of trapsman Lee Person and percussionist Kahil El'Zabar.

Murray's first box set in this series was one of Black Saint/Soul Note's better reissues. And this second volume is it's equal, and in some instances possibly better. The seven albums here span the years 1979 to 1993, and show Murray in different playing styles, but always close to the top of his skills. If you've read this far you're probably familiar with Murray's music, so I'll be brief in my album notes.
