At the fire department, the coffee gets cold – known to many as the (East) German children's book classic by the author Hannes Hüttner and the illustrator Gerhard Lahr from 1969 - is darn funny: the firefighters just want to recover from their strenuous work with a good cup of coffee, the phone is ringing again and calling for the next operation. The coffee stops untouched and Wachtmeister Meier, Löschmeister Wasserhose and the rest of the troops rush to Grandma Eierschecke in Kaffeestraße 13, where an open oven door has just set the apartment on fire. Fortunately, nothing happened to anyone. As a thank you Grandma Eierschecke puts the after all not charred cake in the bag. But who thinks that this can be eaten comfortably for the next coffee break, of course, was wrong!

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) was the fifth child of great composer Johann Sebastian Bach. He was an important composer in the transitional time between the Baroque and Classical periods. These pieces were composed by CPE Bach for the annual meeting of the Captains of the Hamburg Citizens Guard. Composing for this meeting was an honor, and only the most sought-after composers were commissioned. Each year the commissioned composer would compose an oratorio and a cantata. Here, we have CPE Bach’s Oratorio Hebt an, ihr Chore der Freuden, and his Serenata Der Trommeln Schlag, der Pfeifen Spiel.

Bei den alljährlichen Zusammenkünften der Hauptmänner (Captaines) der Hamburgischen Bürgerwache, welche die Stadt zur Verteidigung unterhielt, spielte Musik stets als gestaltendes Festelement eine zentrale Rolle. Die Ehre, für diese Treffen die Musik zu komponieren, welche jeweils aus einem Oratorium und einer Serenata bestanden, erhielten nur die besten und gefragtesten Komponisten.

This second volume of Pfitzner’s Complete Lieder covers the period between 1884 and 1916 and shows why he was considered such a key figure among composers of his generation. A central theme of the songs is the archetypical Romantic focus on the portrayal of nature as a reflection of human feelings. The youthful and enduringly popular Ist der Himmel darum im Lenz so blau (Is the sky so blue in the spring) reflects his greatest qualities as a song composer- a memorable tune and rich, flowing harmonies. Favoring the bold use of color, Pfitner’s songs are characterized by a lively, pulsing rhythm and sweeping, ecstatic melodies.

When the Court Opera Director Wilhelm Jahn commissioned the by no means unvain Johann Strauss Jr. to write a ‘genuine’ opera, he readily accepted. So, he wrote Ritter Pásmán, a work the Waltz King himself regarded as his only one in this genre, although the plot is basically like an operetta. The source was the narrative Pázmán lovag by the Hungarian writer János Aranyi (1817-1882). It deals with jealousy and a kind of tit-for-tat. The premiere of the comic opera at the Vienna Court Opera on New Year’s Day 1892 was a major society event, but its artistic success lagged somewhat behind. The reviewers of the premiere were distanced towards the work. On the one hand, they unanimously elevated the ballet music at the beginning of Act III to the status of an absolute masterpiece. (By the way, this was the first time that a cimbalom could be heard in the orchestra of the Court Opera). The present live recording was captured at the Vienna Musikverein on 27 October 1975, with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Heinz Wallberg, Eberhard Waechter as Ritter Pásmàn, Sona Ghazarian as Queen, Josef Hopfwieser as Hungarian King, and Truedeliese Schmidt as Eva as main cast. The recording includes the complete ballet music as bonus tracks, performed by the Slovac State Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Alfred Walter.
