Abdul Karim Khan’s familial musical lineage is thought to have extended back to the end of the 16th century to Dhondu Nayak, a Hindu musician who was active in Gwalior and to a family of Sufi qawwali devotional singers and sarangi players who began as folk musicians and refined their music over generations. He was born Nov. 11, 1872, the eldest of four siblings to a Sunni family in Kairana in Uttar Pradesh. For at least 250 years, through a complex network of familial relations, Abdul Karim Khan’s family handed down the technology of music, from elder to younger, one note at a time.

London-based jazz guitarist Karim Saber releases his debut album on Ubuntu Music. 'Transmission' seamlessly combines Karim’s love of dynamic extended improvisation with evocative, memorable melodies. The music on the album was written in 2021 and evolved over the course of a residency his band had at MAP Café in Kentish Town, London. Once Karim and the band evolved to the point where each show felt really different, he knew it was time to head to the studio and document the work that they had been doing.

‘The way in which composers influence each other, whether across generations or more directly through the master – pupil relationships that they often cultivate fascinates me. The comparison of William Byrd’s ‘pervasive’ influence on the Elizabethan/Jacobean world with the impact that Arnold Schoenberg left on the twentieth Century, by Joseph Kerman, inspired my repertoire frame on this disk. I chose a selection of keyboard music, whether for the modern piano or the virginals of sixteenth-century England, to indulge in the astonishing versatility with which these instruments have been used across the centuries.

Formed by professional musicians from several countries (Syria, Egypt, Morocco and Spain) and under the direction of Abdel Karim, this ensemble has the purpose of studying and popularizing Arabic classical music.

Its repertory includes music from throughout the Middle East, from Turkey to Egypt, ranging from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Abdel Karim Ensemble also performs Andalusian Arabic music, a genre that originated in Al-Andalus, Islamic medieval Spain, where it was cultivated as a poetic-musical form known as Muwashaha.
