Keiko Lee is a distinguished jazz vocalist, who sings and plays so frankly even with the greatest jazz giants. She's been a regular winner as the best female jazz singer in Japan since 1997 through the reader's poll of Swing Journal, the most known jazz magazine in Japan. Though her attitude towards music is so rigorous and ardent, her caring and heart-warming character grasps the hearts of many enthusiastic fans as well as staff and of musicians. She has also been successful in the Asian and European markets as well, having concerts in Taiwan, Singapore, Korea, and other countries. She does not categorize herself as jazz, and is very eager to dig down from Motown tunes to rock and pop numbers, so tickets sell out fast when she appears in jazz clubs. There's just no comparison to Keiko Lee's soulful voice and virtuosity.

Lee Konitz had been on tour in Japan when he went into the studio with the Laurent de Wilde trio and recorded this album. He's joined on three numbers by Keiko Lee, a smokey Japanese vocalist. The result is somewhat out of the ordinary. There are three Konitz compositions including a reworking of "Thingin'". The rest are standards with an excellent version of Miles Davis "Solar" and Theolonius Monk's "Ruby my dear".

Hank Jones, who has just turned 90, is still wowing audiences around the world with his elegant swing and "magic touch". The tradition of combining Hank Jones with an unexpected rhythm section continues in this wonderfully recorded hybrid SACD. The latest iteration of Jones' Great Jazz Trio includes veteran bassist George Mraz and explosive Billy Kilson who represents a new generation of jazz drummers. His sharp and powerful drumming is surely one of the highlights of this album.

For many, when you think of early rock & roll, certain images and sounds immediately come to mind - Chuck Berry strumming his red Gibson while duck-walking, a sweaty Little Richard wailing into the mike, Jerry Lee Lewis bashing the piano, etc. But what's often forgotten is that in rock's dawning moments, horns played a big part in the then-new genre's sound. And Screamin' Jay Hawkins was one of rock's early artists to embrace blaring saxophones - as well as theatrics. As evidenced by the 1994 release I Shake My Stick at You, Hawkins was rockin' and hollerin' till the very end…

Ex-boxer Screamin' Jay Hawkins' live show, full of on-stage coffins, skulls, and toilets, prefigured the extravagant concert productions of later artists like Alice Cooper and George Clinton, and Hawkins' full awareness of the visual aspect of rock music extended even to his lyrics, which were purposefully graphic and surreal. In essence, Hawkins was a one- or two-trick pony, but boy, those ponies could run. His masterpiece was "I Put a Spell on You," which he originally recorded for OKeh Records (supposedly while extremely drunk) in 1956, and while Hawkins' version was never even close to being a commercial hit, the song has been covered so many times (most notably by Nina Simone) that it has deservedly been certified as a rock and R&B classic.
