Vivaldi, one of the most-performed composers these days, had lain dormant for nearly two centuries; his works were considered lost. All that changed when a stash of manuscripts was found in the library of a monastery in Piedmont in Italy. Vivaldi's style is so unmistakable, that we can tell his authorship after just a few bars of music. We're more likely to mix up phrases from differing works of his than we are to mistake any of his music for that of a contemporary composer. Vivaldi took the text from Psalm 126, which belongs to the Pilgrim Songs in the Book of Psalms and are meant to prepare believers for their meeting with God. The text which is ascribed to King Solomon speaks of the greatness of God without which all human toil remains fruitless.

The Tulipa Consort is an ensemble founded by Johannette Zomer in 2013. For their first recording, a selection has been made from the many wonderful sacred works composed by Antonio Vivaldi, the Red Priest of Venice. Motets, including the splendid Nulla in Mundo Pax and Laudate Pueri Dominum, and two beautiful arias from his only surviving oratorio Juditha Triumphans. The goal of Tulipa Consort is to passionately explore 17th and early 18th century music. Being based in Holland, the name of the ensemble was inspired by an event that happened at the beginning of the 17th century in the Low Countries, the so-called Tulip Mania.

'Andrew Parrott's interpretation of these concertos is an imaginative one & ….effective. John Holloway is the solo violinist in each work and he gives stylish performances.’ –Gramophone
‘Manze’s feeling for detail, his lightly articulated bowing, in a word his sensibility, bring out the charm of Vivaldi’s music; and in this set, with its many affecting slow movements….. the charm is considerable’ –Gramophone

Parrott's decision to perform this selection of Vivaldi's sacred music with sopranos and altos shows how the all-female forces of La Pietà might have coped with tenor and bass lines. Delectable performances in superior sound.

Works by Antonio Vivaldi by definition fall within the repertoire of an Ancient music ensemble such as Pandolfis Consort, which specializes in Renaissance and Baroque music. The fact that the orchestra, founded in 2004 by violist Elzbieta Sajka-Bachler, is now releasing a second album of motets and instrumental concertos by the Grand Master from Venice within just two years testifies on one hand to Vivaldi's rich oeuvre, but on the other hand to how much Vivaldi's compositional art is close to the hearts of the musicians.
