I remember making up songs and melodies from an early age, but never actively pursued composition until I was a graduate student, with music theory as my minor. Some of the works on this disc date from that period. I focused on my career as a pianist, but in recent years composition has taken much more of my time and has been a great joy.

After spending 15 years building the gear for his new endeavor, Cohearent Records which is an All-Valve (Vacuum Tube) recording system from microphones to disk cutterhead award-winning mastering engineer Kevin Gray releases the first LP by jazz saxophonist Kirsten Edkins, Shapes & Sound.

Mature Defense Mechanism is an improvised experiment in the relationships between rock and jazz characterized by whimsy amidst seclusion. It’s natural territory for guitarist Kirsten Carey and drummer Aaron Edgcomb, who are both gaining reputations for adventurous and wide-ranging approaches to music making.

Although he is best remembered for his highly regarded stage and orchestral works, Roussel also composed a significant body of masterful yet relatively unknown chamber music. The Romantic early First Violin Sonata is an epic journey of soaring majesty, while the later Second Violin Sonata is dramatic and succinct, sharing its dynamic neo-Classical style with the String Trio, Roussel’s last completed work.
