Herbert von Karajan was the most renowned conductor to emerge from Europe in the post-World War II era – and through fortuitous timing throughout his career, and in spite of controversy that dogged his early years, he was the most recorded conductor of the 20th century, and is likely to remain one of the most visible (and biggest-selling) conductors well into the 21st century. Born in Salzburg and descended from a family of Greek origin with deep roots in Austria – including scholars and physicians in Vienna and Salzburg – he was a music prodigy, playing the piano at three and playing his first recital a year later.

John Lee Hooker developed a “talking blues” style that became his trademark. Though similar to the early Delta tradition, his metrically free approach and unique sound would make him a staple of the Detroit blues tradition. Often called the “King of the Boogie,” Hooker's driving, rhythmic approach to guitar playing has become an integral part of the blues. His thunderous electric guitar sounded raw, while his basic technique was riveting.
This quintessential release includes two of Hooker's finest albums: Burnin' (1962) - with a full-band accompaniment and featuring the chart success “Boom Boom,” one of Hooker's most identifiable and enduring songs, plus Plays and Sings The Blues (1961) which was filled with 1951-1952 solorecordings and gems from Hooker's early days. Both masterpieces have been remastered and packaged together in this very special collector's edition, which also includes 3 bonus tracks…

Two classic Hooker LPs, all digitally re-mastered, 22 solid slabs of dark, leathery, brooding nostalgia. This is the electric blues at its very roots. This stripped-bare, one man and a growling electric guitar (on most tracks) music is the stuff those guys who fled the south for the auto production lines in the north used to listen to. Hooker’s ‘talking blues’ style is well represented on Folk Lore. Great numbers like I’m Going Upstairs (and we all know what John was going up for), I Like to See You Walk and My First Wife Left Me start to haunt you like some swamp ghost. The Folk Blues tracks are no less powerful. Half A Stranger, Shake, Holler And Run, Down Child and Gonna Boogie all roll into one another to form a big, dusty landscape punctuated by mid-20th century American industry.

Darlene Yoshimoto was a Japanese singer from Honolulu who was a member of an R&B group with Teddy Tanaka but also released a few songs on her own. After Hawaii's statehood in 1959, she looked forward to being a teen sensation but wanted to show maturity so she made music that represented vocal jazz/pop jazz. She released a full album on the Mahalo company and had intentions of becoming a success not only as a singer but also an actress. This unofficial compilation made sometime in the 2010's opens with two songs she did with Tanaka and ends with two songs from the mid-1960's, which lead to ending her singing career. But the full-length album she did in 1962 is quite good and remains unreleased on CD so this is a vinyl rip.

The Shadows' second album is one of the group's better efforts, though not a very hard-rocking one. By this time, the Shadows were moving in a direction similar to that of Cliff Richard, aiming for a wider, more mature audience that was attuned to more than rock & roll…
