Sardinian-born trumpeter Paolo Fresu and bandoneonist Daniele di Bonaventura from Fermo, Italy, indicated the depth of their musical understanding on 2010’s Mistico Mediterraneo, a collaboration with Corsican singers A Filetta. Left to their own resources they explore a very broad range of material which includes original ballads by both men, improvisations, a Puccini theme from La Boheme, liturgical music, pieces by legendary Chilean songwriter Victor Jara and Uruguayan singer-songwriter Jaime Roos, music of Neapolitan composer Ernersto de Curtis, “O que sera” by Brazil’s Chico Buarque and more.

At a time when cross-pollination has become the new musical evolution, ECM Records remains at the vanguard. Whether blending music of Tunisian origins with European impressionistic concerns and hints of New World groove on oudist Anouar Brahem's The Astounding Eyes of Rita (2009), or marrying Persian percussion with Baroque instrumentation and Fourth World improvisation on keyboardist Jon Balke's Siwan (2009), few labels (if any) can boast such an impressive catalogue of constant innovation, where unfailing respect for tradition is matched by an equal disregard for the hard-coded conventions that seem, on the surface, inherent to its very definition. ~ AllAboutJazz

This magical debonair international trio reminds us once again of the porosity of walls between nations and fluidity of musical styles, as it flits through an enticing shadow world that recaptures Paris in the 1950s. Swedish Jan Lundgren's pointillist piano blends dreamily with Richard Galliano's poignant squeezebox and Sardinian Paolo Fresu's acerbic, haunted trumpet to raise the shades of Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Miles Davis, Charles Trenet, Maurice Ravel and Josephine Baker. Waltzes, of course, are numerous, swirling and dreamy affairs that evoke smoky cabarets, midnight quais, Seine-side trysts. Unisons between Galliano and Fresu are mesmerizingly resonant, especially with flugelhorn or Harmon-muted trumpet (the eerie, soundtrack-destined “Sonia's Nightmare”). Filling out the program's sweeter side are tunes by Jobim (echoing Harold Arlen's “Over The Rainbow”), Trenet (that 'translates' to “I Wish You Love”) and a semi-classic spin on Ravel's pristine “Mother Goose.” Any improvising? Why, yes, a little. Lundgren nips a tasty solo on his “Years Ahead.” There's a bit of stretch time for Fresu and Galliano often, too, more poignant for lasting just a chorus. The communal warmth and understanding between these three expresses itself as earthy, organic and timeless. They achieve—with apparent effortlessness and grace—a session with Greek proportions of heart, mind and spirit: rather pretty, pretty moving, moving right along. Their sea—warmly, reassuringly Mediterranean—absolutely improves on second dips. (about-jazz)

While the connection between Cuban pianist Omar Sosa and Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu was established back in 2006, their partnership truly blossomed with Alma (Ota Music, 2012), a beauty of an album with a soft sell approach. That record—quite possibly the most moving item in either man's discography—prioritized heart over all else, and this follow-up date follows suit.

Paolo Fresu & Uri Caine - Think (2009)

Beautiful duets between trumpeter Paolo Fresu and keyboardist Uri Caine – a wonderful session from the Italian arm of Blue Note Records, and easily one of Caine's more sensitive moments on record! The pair play together without any sort of rhythm section – just Fresu's horn, and Caine's keys, which are either acoustic piano or Fender Rhodes. But many tracks also feature a string quartet too – used lightly, but nicely – bringing in some gentle tones that really fit the mood of the music, and further underscore some of the more personal sounds that are clearly Paolo's influence on the set.
