The Indian conductor Zubin Mehta is closely associated with the city of Munich and the orchestras based there. From 1998 to 2006, he was General Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, and has similarly close ties with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. The orchestra's 2018 Asian tour with Zubin Mehta was voted No. 1 in the "10 Top Concerts 2018" by Japanese critics. In January 2020, he conducted the memorial concert of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for their late chief conductor Mariss Jansons. – This BR-KLASSIK CD features recordings of concerts on February 28 and March 1, 2013 in the Philharmonie im Gasteig.

Seven musical character images – each one immensely sensual and expressive, and standing on its own like a monument. The British composer Gustav Holst, fascinated by (esoteric) astrology, chose the planets of our solar system and the characteristics attributed to them as the basis for what he referred to as musical ""mood pictures"" or ""embodiments"". Ultimately, the seven movements of his orchestral suite “The Planets”, op. 32, composed between 1914 and 1916, can also be understood as general explorations of human traits.

Henry Purcell's "Fairy Queen" and "Dioclesian" (called "The Prophetess" here) were two examples of semi-opera, a genre that flourished in England in the late 17th and early 18th centuries before Handel blew up the spot with Italian opera. In this recording, Jordi Savall gives these unique, at times Lully-esque scores his customary imaginative and colorful treatment with his orchestra Le Concert des Nations. The performance standard here is very high, highlighted by rich, dark bass lines, a stellar violin section, and impeccable intonation in the winds and brass. This group's comparatively well known reading of the Handel Water Music is in a similar vein stylistically, so if you're familiar with that and like it, this would be a good choice.

The legendary live performance with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra on December 18 & 19, 1980, 18 years after Kondrashin premiered "Babi Yar", and about 3 months before he suddenly died. It is a transcendental masterpiece that is unparalleled yet. The lyrics of Yevtuschenko at the time of the premiere were forced to use a revised version when recording to Melodia later, so the performance with the original lyrics used here is even more valuable. Kondrashin's strong assertion and a kind of unique tension have been consistently maintained from the beginning, which begins with a heavy weight, and it is an amazing performance that grabs the listener's heart. This release features the new mastering from the original analog master.
