En visite chez son amie Jeanne Forestier, une grande bourgeoise parisienne, Mathilde Loisel tombe en extase devant la magnificence de ses bijoux, dont une splendide parure qui retient plus particulièrement son attention. De retour chez elle, la jeune femme, mariée à un petit fonctionnaire ministériel, ne peut que constater la médiocrité de son existence. Après qu'elle s'en est plaint à son époux Charles, ce dernier obtient pour elle une invitation à la soirée de gala du ministère. N'ayant ni toilette, ni bijoux à porter pour la circonstance, Mathilde demande à Jeanne de lui prêter sa parure pour le bal…

Adelaide, Belle, Felicie and Ludovic are young adult siblings who once lived in grandeur until their father's merchant ships were lost at sea. The family is now near ruin, but Adelaide and Felicie nonetheless still squander away the family money on themselves and keeping beautiful, whereas Belle slaves around the house, doting on her father. Ludovic detests his two spoiled sisters, but is protective of Belle, especially with his friend Avenant, a handsome scoundrel who wants to marry Belle. Crossing the forest one dark and stormy evening, the father gets lost and takes refuge in a fantastical castle. Upon leaving, he steals a blossom off a rose bush, which Belle requested. The castle's resident, an angry beast, sentences him to one of two options for the theft of the rose: his own death, or that of one of his daughters. As she feels she is the cause of her father's predicament (despite her sisters asking for far more lavish gifts)…

Eventually he winds up in New York, where he sells his songs to a music publisher, but refuses to sell his most treasured composition: "Dixie." The film is based on the life of Daniel Decatur Emmett, who wrote the classic song "Dixie."

In the Island of Manukura, a French colony in the South Seas, the joyful Terangi is a leader among the natives and the first mate of the Katopua, the tall ship of Captain Nagle. Terangi gets married with Marama and sooner he sails to Tahiti. While in a bar playing with other natives, Terangi is offended by an alcoholic racist French and he hits his face, breaking his jaw. Despite the testimony of Captain Nagle, Terangi is sentenced to six months of forced labor since the victim had political connections with the Powers That Be. Captain Nagle asks the Governor Eugene DeLaage to uses his influence to help Terangi, but the governor refuses.

In the year 1916, three prissy silent film actors are fired after they demand a higher salary for their popular "Three Amigos" western films. Later that day they receive a plea from the villagers of Santo Poco who have been under siege from the notorious villain El Guapo. Mistaking the plea for an acting job, the actors steal their costumes and travel to Santo Poco. The villagers give the actors a hero's welcome, believing them to be bona fide gunfighters…
