This Teldec collection was a project close to György Ligeti’s heart – the pioneering Hungarian composer was actively involved in the recording process up until his death in 2006. The artists had long-standing relationships with Ligeti and his work, both in the studio and in concert: pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Schönberg and Asko Ensembles led by Reinbert de Leeuw.

The works on this album were written between 1935 and 2019 by four Hungarian composers: Béla Bartók, who was the teacher of Sándor Veress, who taught György Ligeti, who in turn was an early but formative influence on Péter Eötvös. Their compositions all share the idea of a dialogue between cultured and popular elements, between a Western music tradition and folk music, particularly of Eastern Europe. This idea was formulated in the early 20th century by Bartók himself, who considered the use of folk elements in a piece of art music not only as a tool to revitalize the Classical tradition but also as a mean to unite different cultures.

Quatuor Diotima makes it's Pentatone debut with a recording of Györgi Ligeti's string quartets. While the second quartet from 1968 is an avantgarde classic, the first from 1953-54, "Metamorphoses nocturnes", is often nicknamed Bartók's seventh quartet, pointing out the continuity between these two Hungarian master composers. Despite moments of nostalgia, it already possesses the ferocious, adventurous nature of the later quartet. In-between these two iconoclast works, the Andante and Allegretto from 1950 offers an intimate moment of repose.

The term étude first started to turn up in musical literature in the late 1700s, and came into common usage in the first half of the 19th centuryeither because of, or in close proximity to, the Paris Conservatoire, where the form was polished and promulgated. The notion of a piece of music exactingly engineered to promote some specific aspect of technique was nothing new; in her public presentations of 'The Étude Project', pianist Jenny Lin traces the concept back to Johann Sebastian Bachs Clavier-Übung. Countless composers have risen to the challenge of the étude. This album, the first documentation of a sweeping project conceived by Lin, includes some of the most famous examples Debussy, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Messiaen, Ligeti, and Glass alongside equally noteworthy contributions to the format by such mavericks as Ruth Crawford Seeger, Toshio Hosokawa, and Unsuk Chin. Lin further pairs each of her canonical selections with an entirely new work by a member of ICEBERG New Music, a determinedly heterodox collaborative of 10 gifted young composers who represent a broad range of stylistic inclinations, but who are united by their enduring faith in substance and craft.

Éric Alfred Leslie Satie who signed his name Erik Satie after 1884, was a French composer and pianist. Satie was a colourful figure in the early 20th-century Parisian avant-garde. His work was a precursor to later artistic movements such as minimalism, Surrealism, repetitive music, and the Theatre of the Absurd. An eccentric, Satie was introduced as a "gymnopedist" in 1887, shortly before writing his most famous compositions, the Gymnopédies. Later, he also referred to himself as a "phonometrician" (meaning "someone who measures sounds"), preferring this designation to that of "musician", after having been called "a clumsy but subtle technician" in a book on contemporary French composers published in 1911.

For Cantante e tranquillo Keller Quartett leader András Keller and producer Manfred Eicher developed a carefully balanced program based entirely upon slow movements. “Together we began reviewing the recordings we had made over the last twenty years,” says Eicher, “juxtaposing works of different historical eras, uncovering correspondences between composers of the past and the present.” As a contextual frame for the project it was decided to record the slow movements of Beethoven’s Op.130 and 135, add new recordings of Kurtág, and integrate older and newer interpretations of Knaifel, Ligeti and Bach into the album.

A little over five years ago I started writing my first string quartet. At around the same time I was working on the first movement of Fantasy, and even though the idioms and overall styles of those two pieces were differing, I knew that I wanted to connect them in one project. This project turned out to be Lit Scenes.
