Until 2014, Linda Perhacs had only issued one album, Parallelograms, in 1970 on Kapp Records. That album immediately fell into obscurity, but gained fans over the ensuing years as fans as disparate as Devendra Banhart, Daft Punk, and death metal group Opeth sung it's praises. As the status of Parallelograms continued to rise in the 21st century, Linda found her way back to recording thanks to talented fans like Fernando Perdomo, Julia Holter, and Chris Price. In 2014, another fan, Sufjan Stevens, released Linda's 44-year follow up to Parallelograms, The Soul Of All Natural Things (produced by Perhacs, Chris Price, and Fernando Perdomo), on his label Asthmatic Kitty.

Discerning an aesthetic thread through the Mark Pritchard discography was tough in 1996. Twenty years later, forget it. Around 2013, he evidently tired of thinking up a new alias with each expectation-confounding release and, under his birth name, initiated a trio of brief releases for the Warp label. Featuring drop-ins from Ragga Twins and Spikey Tee, the fully energized EPs moved through jungle, bass, juke, ragga, and grime. They provided no indication for the approach taken on Under the Sun, itself a stylistic manifold. The album begins with "?," a sorrowful and moving ambient piece. Given a low-key release in 2009, the track has been used by Mala to open DJ sets, and it serves a similarly cleansing purpose for its new home here, leading to a rolling Krautrock chorale that features the baleful, multi-tracked voice of Bibio…

Lily & Maria's sole, mighty rare album is a strange oddity, all the more so for its appearance on a major label. As singers, Lily & Maria sound very much like the sort of high-voiced, virginal female vocalists common in the early-'60s folk revival, like the only somewhat less slightly obscure duo Kathy & Carol (who recorded traditional folk music for Elektra). But the material and production on Lily & Maria show a decidedly psychedelic, late-'60s influence, if only a mild acid folk one. It creates the impression of a couple of choirgirls singing tunes that are a cross between what you'd hear from a choir and a coffeehouse duo.

Richard Fariña was dead; Bob Dylan had plugged in. As with most genres, there's been a glut of folk compilations released over the past decade and this is one of the very best. The Donovan track aside, this is essentially a compilation of female sung songs that highlight the more psychedelic and, in a lot of cases, funk elements of folk from both sides of the Atlantic during the late 60s and early 70s. It's difficult to select highlights from such a strong selection of songs but special mention must go to Sunforest's majestic & bass heavy 'Magician In the Mountain', Fairport Convention's sublime 'Autopsy' and Spleen's tripped out 'Along Came Sam'.
