Metal Angel is a collection of eighteen pieces and a Symphonic Sonata for organ by Gunnar Idenstam, born in Swedish Lappland in 1961; this album presents fifteen of these pieces in a series of three suites. Written between 2013 and 2019, they exploit the full range of the modern symphonic organ to give musical expression to the idea of angels in a Gothic fantasy world. Idenstams distinctive musical language blends the physical energy of symphonic rock and metal and the modal cast of Scandinavian folk-music with an approach to the organ in the French cathedral tradition of such composers as Dupré, Vierne and Widor. This recording presents some of the most fiercely exciting organ music of recent years, in high-voltage performances by the composer himself.

Features 24 bit remastering and comes with a mini-description. This is a good introduction to the remarkable Lars Gullin, a masterful baritone sax player, writer, arranger, and a key figure in Sweden's jazz scene. Lars Gullin Swings (East-West, 1958) feature Swedish baritone master Lars Gullin improvising with an all-star cast of jazz compatriots. Whether he is performing in a quartet, quintet, sextet, octet or big band setting, the Mulligan-influenced Gullin wails throughout. Gullin’s tone on the “big horn” is light and agile; his solos flow with a wealth of unending invention. These albums are extremely rare and if you were lucky enough to find them, would carry a very hefty price tag on the collector's market.

The octet Lars 8 - nine musicians including vocalist - plays jazz compositions and original arrangements of mainly Lars Gullin, but also by Lars Sjösten, Lars Färnlöf and Lars Werner. All of these composers are icons within the Swedish jazz, in which, in particular, Lars Gullin carried on a musical heritage based on a Nordic, romantic tone language. Several of the musicians in Lars 8 have worked regularly and closely with one or more of the above "Larsar" over the years on both recordings and concerts. The octet's repertoire also includes originals and songs by the band's own members.

Lars Vogt enjoyed a meteoric rise after capturing second prize at the 1990 Leeds International Piano Competition. He managed to straddle two worlds in the process, that of soloist/recitalist and that of chamber player. He regularly appeared with front-rank orchestras across the globe and on the recital stages at major venues while founding a chamber music festival and making numerous recordings devoted to chamber works. Vogt's taste in repertory was unusually broad, taking in not only the German sphere (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven) but also a veritable potpourri (Dvorák, Saint-Saëns, Stravinsky) as well as contemporary composers (Erkki-Sven Tüür, Volker David Kirchner). He possessed a powerful technique and a chameleonic interpretive persona that together allowed him to capture the subtleties and negotiate the challenges presented by this vast array of composers.

Quite a rare set from this important Swedish player - one recorded in Sweden by Metronome, but issued here in the US on the short-lived East-West imprint of Atlantic. The tracks all feature Gullin on baritone sax - in a variety of settings that range through quartet, quintet, sextet, octet, and big band. As always, Lars pulls far more out of the instrument than any of his contemporaries could hope to - and the backing he gets from Swedish modernists like Arne Domnerus, Rune Ofwerman, Bert Dahlander, and Sven Ake Persson really help keep things moving along at a strong pace.

The Spannungen Festival held in Heimbach takes its name (German for “voltages”) from its very peculiar venure, a beautiful Jugendstil hydro-electric power plant. June 18th will mark the opening of the 2023 edition, the first to be organized since the passing of its founder Lars Vogt, who was also a regular performer with such fellow instrumentalists as Julia Fischer, Christian Tetzlaff, Isabelle Faust or Kim Kashkashian.

In the mid-1980s, the Swedish Dragon label came out with five LPs of music featuring the great Swedish baritonist Lars Gullin. The second volume, which has the earliest recordings in the batch, consists of performances that were either previously unreleased or quite obscure at the time. Gullin is heard in quartets and quintets, sometimes as a sideman, including a few very rare appearances on alto which, although worthy, show why he mostly stuck to baritone. The cool-toned bop, reminiscent but not derivative of Gerry Mulligan, should be of great interest to 1950s jazz collectors.

The term text-sound composition was coined in 1967 in Sweden by the composers/writers Lars-Gunnar Bodin and Bengt Emil Johnsson, and was meant to serve to name a genre that was a vital art form in the no man's land between sound, poetry, and music. Text-sound compositions had influences from previous modernistic waves such as futurism, dadaism, lettrism, etc., but perhaps the most important influence was the Swedish poet and visual artist Öyvind Fahlström, who had just over a decade earlier coined the term "concrete poetry". The term concrete poetry related to Pierre Schaeffer's concrete music, and it is somewhere between concrete poetry and concrete music that text-sound compositions appear. The birth of the electronic music studio and concrete music's idea that every sound can be freed from its original context and given a new meaning when it is reworked and put together with other sounds in the electronic music studio became the catharsis for text-sound composition. The CD box contains works by the following text-sound composers and sound poets: Charles Amirkhanian, Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Svante Bodin, Henri Chopin, Bob Cobbing, François Dufrêne, Gust Gils, Jarl och Sonja Hammarberg-Åkesson, Sten Hanson, Bernard Heidsieck, C. Christer Hennix, Åke Hodell, Bengt Emil Johnsson, Sandro Key-Åberg, Bengt af Klintberg, Ilmar Laaban, Annea Lockwood & Harvey Matusow, Arrigo Lora-Totino, Ghérasim Luca, Arne Mellnäs, Franz Mon, Ladislav Novák, Diter Rot & Emmet Williams, Erik Thygesen, Paul de Vree.
