When tenor saxophonist Charles Lloyd turned 80, he made sure to mark the occasion with an epic concert at Santa Barbara’s Lobero Theatre. His youthful quintet Kindred Spirits is anchored by his longstanding New Quartet rhythm section (bassist Reuben Rogers, drummer Eric Harland), but with them are pianist Gerald Clayton and guitarist Julian Lage, both newer arrivals to the Lloyd universe and major leaders in their own right. Clayton imaginatively inhabits a space once filled by his predecessor, Jason Moran, while Lage (playing a Telecaster) follows in a line of acclaimed Lloyd guitar sidemen (John Abercrombie, Bill Frisell, and Gabor Szabo). Playing tried-and-true Lloyd repertoire beginning with “Dream Weaver,” the title track of his first Atlantic LP from ’66, and ending with the abstract, explosive “Part 5, Ruminations,” Kindred Spirits captures the essence of Lloyd’s mystical jazz vision, and gives it new, forward-thinking shape as well.

This is the Galliard Ensemble's 5th recording for Deux- Elles. To celebrate their 30th anniversary, they are joined by pianist Sam Haywood in an epic programme bookended by two pillars of the repertoire, Mozart's Quintet for Piano and Winds and Poulenc's Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano. Featured prominently in the middle is the marvellously expansive and much less recorded Sextet for Piano and Winds by Ludwig Thuille, a close colleague of Richard Strauss. This album is a melting pot of colours, textures and timbres, beautifully captured and balanced by sound engineer Matthew Wadsworth.

After collaborations with Wynton Marsalis and Shabaka Hutchings, the visionary South African pianist and composer Nduduzo Makhathini is set to release his Blue Note debut Modes of Communication: Letters from the Underworlds, an expansive album in which lyrical, plaintive horns mingle with percussion, pained yelps and urgent lyrics in a musical exploration of ancestral realms.

Recorded October 16, 2019, Tanya Tucker's Live From The Troubadour features a cache of her #1 hits, like Tucker’s smash first single "Delta Dawn" plus "Strong Enough To Bend," "What's Your Mama's Name," and "Would You Lay with Me (In a Field of Stone)”. With a sublime medley of Springsteen's "I'm on Fire" & Cash's "Ring of Fire" and tracks from GRAMMY-winning Country Album Of The Year, While I'm Livin', like "Mustang Ridge," "The Wheels of Laredo," "Hard Luck," and the poignant title track.
