I think this is one of Kentons best recordings.Even though it was recorded live some 40 years ago, the sound quality is as good as, or even better than a studio.This is a rarity in Kenton's discography, a live performance, in which the musicianship and the band's connection to the audience are clearly heard and felt.Includes six previously unreleased tracks.Highly Recommended.

Album released in Spain in 1973, as a sequel to the original English in 1969 -, which includes up to 9 of the most famous works by English musician, composer and editor Albert William Ketèlbey (Birmingham, 1875-1959). Although he composed a lot of works for symphony orchestras and chamber groups Ketèlbey is and always will remember especially for small musical pieces such as those included in this LP, which were very popular for their great descriptive strength and the beautiful melodies they contain. Eric Rogers conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with more than 80 musicians and a 30 male voices choir, recorded at Kingsway Hall in London this repertoire without making the slightest alteration in original scores of Ketèlbey, shown here in all its purity and expressiveness.

Arriving at the twilight of the 1960s, Santana were psychedelic pioneers who ushered Latin rock into the mainstream with their first three albums: Santana, Abraxas, and Santana III. Thanks to their appearance at Woodstock, their eponymous album was a smash hit right out of the gate, with its single "Evil Ways" making it into the Billboard Top Ten in 1969. They remained at the top of the charts until 1973, when leader and namesake guitarist Carlos Santana began exploring esoteric, spiritual jazz fusion on his own.

The Boneheads originally founded by Abe Nole in the early 1960’s had six trombones and three rhythm players (piano, bass, and drums). The founding members were professional trombone players in the Las Vegas showrooms and consisted of Abe Nole, Charlie Loper, Archie LeCoque, Tommy Hodges, Pat Thompson and Bill Smiley. They rehearsed on the second floor of the old Silver Slipper on The Las Vegas Strip and occasionally at Abe’s home.

Perhaps the fundamental characteristic of the contemporary Mexican jazz movement is its diversity and the number of musicians and projects. At the bottom of this configuration is the dialectic between training and profession. The new generations of jazz players have the best possible formation in history at an early age. And in that sense the possibility of developing a profession as never before in the history of popular Mexican music. It happens that the shadow of American and New York jazz in particular weighs heavily on this emerging conformation.

Martin Küchen is among the most thoughtful of saxophonists. His solo work often involves thematic content and one suspects he deeply considers his approaches to that content, even as (I imagine) a good portion of the actual playing is improvised.
