Stephen Hough joins the celebrations for Chopin s 200th birthday with a disc containing much of the composer s most extraordinary music, written in the last years of his life where the expressive possibilities of his art were constantly unfolding and he imbued his favored forms with previously unknown levels of complexity and emotional depth. This disc includes the intoxicatingly ornamented Berceuse Op 57 and the sublime Barcarolle in F sharp major as well as the Polonaise-Fantasy in A flat major and the towering Piano Sonata No 3 in B minor. Also included are two late Nocturnes that demonstrate how Chopin s art had evolved since he first composed in that genre in his youth. The program is completed by a selection of Mazurkas, each a tiny jewel, containing no less mastery than their larger counterparts, and providing moving sonic evidence of the contemplative profundity of Chopin s late style. Stephen Hough s extraordinarily sensitive playing is informed by his limitless technique and engaging musical imagination.
The Legendary Quatuor Mosaïques celebrates its 30th anniversary with a fabulous return to disc: the immense and demanding Everest of the last string quartets of Beethoven. The late string quartets are themselves exceptional: metaphysical masterpieces in which almost all of human emotion and pioneering musical concepts exist. The cycle represents a unique entity in the entire history of music. The Quatuor Mosaïques, performing on period instruments, delivers stunning and rarely equalled performances, perfectly balanced between purity, precision and a sublime harmonic richness.
2016 marks the 40th anniversary of Jean Martinon’s death. This 14-CD collection focuses on Martinon’s activity with the Orchestre National de l’O.R.T.F between 1968 and 1975 and on repertoire – much of it French – that complements the works by Debussy and Ravel that feature on Martinon’s best-known recordings. The box brings together recordings he made for both EMI and Erato and also includes the first commercial releases of live recordings kept at France’s Institut national de l'audiovisuel (INA) and dating from 1970 (Roussel’s Symphony No 3), 1971 (Bartók’s Miraculous Mandarin) and 1972 (Falla’s complete Three-Cornered Hat).

The Pacific North West and the English North West are damp, mossy, riddled with steep, unexpected valleys, dotted with abandoned mills, and frequently cloaked in mist. Most of the year you’d be wise to wear waterproofs. David Lynch set Twin Peaks in the former; it’s not a great leap to imagine it being re-cast and set in the latter. Paddy Considine would probably be involved; Yorkshire Tea, too. As for the soundtrack? Well, that’s what this album is about.
