Unicorn released three exquisite albums in the mid-’70s with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd in the producer’s chair. The albums and the band found a wide audience elusive, even though the band opened for many heavyweights in the day (including Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac, The Doobie Brothers, Billy Joel, Dr. Hook), played with Kate Bush on her first proper demo recordings that landed her a deal with EMI, and were even covered by their producer, David Gilmour, on his first self-titled solo album, released in 1978.

Laughing Stock is a band completely in command of their artistic vision. That vision is quite complex, and the band has no goal of fitting in a specific genre. 80’s artpop, 70’s prog, neo-prog, folk and metal. They are all parts that fit in the puzzle.

Although she enjoyed stardom and an enduring multi-decade career in the U.K., folk singer Julie Felix never achieved widespread recognition in her native United States. After immigrating to England in the mid-'60s, the Californian was able to capitalize on the country's sudden post-Dylan appetite for American folk music and subsequently became the first solo folk artist to sign a major-label deal there. During her late-'60s peak, Felix's career in England was booming; she had scored a number of hits, sold out Royal Albert Hall, and hosted a popular variety television show. Her popularity continued into the early '70s, after which she spent a period living and recording in Norway – where she also had several hits – before returning to California and focusing on humanitarian issues.

Recorded at a low ebb in Nelson's career, the tracks here were never intended for solo release; instead, they were demos for a projected band called Perfect Serpents – a sort of Be Bop Deluxe Mark II. That project never managed to get off the ground, and Nelson issued this set, a rough snapshot of what might have been. Like most demos, it's rough; the drum machines used sound raw, and often too far in front, and the mixes aren't perfect (it's a shame, really, that he didn't go back and remix the tracks to do them more justice before releasing them). However, the Nelson guitar magic is there in abundance, multi-layered and glorious. His singing still remains a take-it-or-leave-it proposition, but those already converted will love it. As for the music, it's far more energetic and focused around songs than Nelson had been for a while.

The Unicorn saga began in 1963 when Ken Baker met Pat Martin at secondary school in England. They were both learning to play the guitar at the time, and soon began jamming on British beat tunes and Beatles covers in Martin's garage. Drummer and soon lead vocalist Peter Perrier was brought in and various people filled in on bass until Trevor Mee (who had been jamming with Tony Rivers & the Castaways) came aboard as a guitarist, with Martin switching over to bass. By 1968, they were playing gigs as the Late Edition (or simply the Late, as they called themselves by 1968) and backing other singers. In 1969, during a month-long residency in Copenhagen, they listened to the Crosby, Stills & Nash album, which been released in May of that year.

Maybe the best CD of Alkistis Protopsalti, full of rhythm and energy. The album includes some really great songs and among them two renditions that Alkistis interprets, putting her unique stamp. Track no 2 is the greek version of Nickelblack's "How you remind me" and Protopsalti's charismatic voice adds extra power to that wonderful rock ballad. Roger Clency's "Ole Ole" at no 7, interpreted by Alkistis creates an enthousiasm at every audience. An album you will hear again and again. Enjoy.
