The Sacri concerti a voce sola. Con la Partitura per l’organo, published in Venice by Bartolomeo Magni in 1642, have been composed during Filago stay in Venice and follow a long silence in the author publications, according to what Filago himself writes in the preface. This is the fourth and last print of this author: the preceding volumes published in 1611 and 1619 contain polyphonic motets, and another volume, presumably published between these two, is lost. The volume of 1611 is extant in an incomplete copy.

Fans of Deep Forest should know what to expect - precise electronic drums and basslines, mesmerizing stereophonic loops, sampled chanting and softly droning synthetic pads form the background for the various male singers. The singing on most of the tracks is energetic and very fast and even if you understand the French and Breton lyrics you may find it hard to sing along (and with melodies as catchy as these you will probably want to!). The singing is complemented with brilliant instrumental passages played on bagpipes, bombardes, violons and various whistles and pipes. All very competently and professionally played and contributing to the "world music" sound of the album.

The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto was written in 1959, and inspired by a tale often called the Romeo & Juliet of ancient China. Chen and He deftly combine a Western classical idiom with elements from Chinese opera, such as grace notes and portamento effects, and the work has become one of the most famous and acclaimed pieces of Chinese classical music. This album also features an interpretation of Chen Gang’s Sunshine over Tashkurgan, which adds Central-Asian maqam to the stylistic palette.

As part of their comprehensive survey of the music of Claudio Monteverdi, Claudio Cavina and La Venexiana delivered an exceptional version of L’Orfeo, a reading which had been honed by their trailblazing interpretations of the composer’s madrigals. This highly-esteemed recording of the favola in musica – critics applauded and fêted it in many different countries – subsequently dropped out of the catalogue and Glossa is very pleased to have the opportunity to return it there as part of this year’s 450th anniversary commemorations of the composer’s birth.
