MONOLORD make their Relapse Records debut with their new album, No Comfort. The Swedish power trio channel the most exciting elements of driving rock and crushing stoner sludge to produce one of the year's most gripping and heavy albums. Tracks like "The Bastard Son" and "The Last Leaf" showcase undeniable riffs piling over each other, continually evolving alongside heart-pounding drums with a bass attack that will make even the most conditioned ears bleed. No Comfort elevates Monolord from one of the underground's best bands to true leaders of the genre. Rarely does a band so seamlessly fuse absolutely heavy riffs with undeniable groove.
Les Penning is a British folk musician and composer, best known for his work with Mike Oldfield on the album Ommadawn and several of Oldfield's singles. He is credited with introducing Oldfield to medieval music through their time playing together at Penrhos Court. He has worked with many other artists, playing woodwind, as producer or as recording engineer, and has created radio drama for BBC Hereford and Worcester and music for two S4C television series: Gwyddion and an adaption by Gareth Miles of the William John Griffith novel Storïau'r Henllys Fawr.
Critically acclaimed woodwindist Mwata Bowden's One Foot In One Foot Out CD features a cross generational ensemble that includes fellow Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicans (AACM) cohorts reedist Ari Brown, drummer Avreeayl Ra, bassist Harrison Bankhead, trumpeter Leon Q. Allen and spoken word artist Khari B. Bowden can be heard on dozens of recordings, from rhythm and blues artists in the 70s to Edward Wilkerson s 8 Bold Souls to Tatsu Aoki s Miyumi Ensemble, but this is his first recording of his own compositions. Not surprisingly, those compositions range from reminiscences of the days when 47th Street was swinging and the Bronzeville neighborhood where Bowden grew up was a rich tapestry of African American culture, to a graphic notation composition drawn in the shape of a four leaf clover, connecting to Bowden s interest in organic shapes and structure.
California Jam (also known as Cal Jam) was a rock music festival co-headlined by Deep Purple and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, held at the Ontario Motor Speedway in Ontario, California, on April 6, 1974. It was produced by ABC Entertainment, Sandy Feldman and Leonard Stogel. Pacific Presentations, a Los Angeles-based concert company headed by Sepp Donahower and Gary Perkins, coordinated the event, booked all the musical talent and ran the advertising campaign. Don Branker worked for Leonard Stogel and was responsible for concert site facilitation, toilets, fencing and medical. The California Jam attracted 300,000–400,000 paying music fans. The festival set what were then records for the loudest amplification system ever installed, the highest paid attendance, and highest gross in history. It was the last of the original wave of rock festivals, as well as one of the most well-executed and financially successful, and presaged the era of media consolidation and the corporatization of the rock music industry.
For every successful hit act that cracked the charts in the early 50s to mid 60s, there were thousands of obscure artists exhibiting genuine country numbers free from mainstream oversight. Strut My Stuff rounds up such enigmas as the hectic hillbilly bopper “You’ve Been Honky Tonkin’,” the shotgun-wedding scenario of “My Inlaws Made An Outlaw Out Of Me,” and many more farm-raised rarities!
