A Brief History of Analysis: With Emphasis on Philosophy, Concepts, and Numbers, Including Weierstraß' Real Numbers

A Brief History of Analysis: With Emphasis on Philosophy, Concepts, and Numbers, Including Weierstraß' Real Numbers by Detlef D. Spalt
English | PDF,EPUB | 2022 | 265 Pages | ISBN : 3031006496 | 6.5 MB

This book explores the origins of mathematical analysis in an accessible, clear, and precise manner. Concepts such as function, continuity, and convergence are presented with a unique historical point of view. In part, this is accomplished by investigating the impact of and connections between famous figures, like Newton, Leibniz, Johann Bernoulli, Euler, and more. Of particular note is the treatment of Karl Weierstraß, whose concept of real numbers has been frequently overlooked until now. By providing such a broad yet detailed survey, this book examines how analysis was formed, how it has changed over time, and how it continues to evolve today. A Brief History of Analysis will appeal to a wide audience of students, instructors, and researchers who are interested in discovering new historical perspectives on otherwise familiar mathematical ideas.

p-adic Numbers: An Introduction

p-adic Numbers: An Introduction by Fernando Q. Gouvêa
English | PDF | 2020 | 371 Pages | ISBN : 3030472949 | 3.6 MB

There are numbers of all kinds: rational, real, complex, p-adic, and more. The p-adic numbers are not as well known as the others, but they play a fundamental role in number theory and in other parts of mathematics, capturing information related to a chosen prime number p. They also allow us to use methods from calculus and analysis to obtain results in algebra and number theory.

Complex Numbers

Complex Numbers by Walter Ledermann
English | PDF | 1962 | 70 Pages | ISBN : 0710086342 | 4 MB

THE purpose of this book is to present a straightforward introduction to complex numbers and their properties. Complex numbers, like other kinds of numbers, are essen tially objects with which to perform calculations according to certain rules, and when this principle is borne in mind, the nature of complex numbers is no more mysterious than that of the more familiar types of numbers. This formal approach has recently been recommended in a Reportt prepared for the Mathematical Association. We believe that it has distinct advantages in teaching and that it is more in line with modern algebraical ideas than the alternative geometrical or kinematical definitions of ..; - 1 that used to be proposed. On the other hand, an elementary textbook is clearly not the place to enter into a full discussion of such questions as logical consistency, which would have to be included in a rigorous axiomatic treatment. However, the steps that had to be omitted (with due warning) can easily be filled in by the methods of abstract algebra, which do not conflict with the 'naive' attitude adopted here.
