Nestled in the quaint upstate town of Saratoga Springs, New York is Caffè Lena, the oldest continuously operating folk music coffeehouse in the US. Opened by Lena Spencer in 1960, this tiny room has played host to influential artists across diverse genres of music; traditional folk, blues, singer-songwriters, jazz and bluegrass. Luckily, many performances were caught on tape through the years, offering the listener a thrilling seat inside this hallowed venue. 'Live At Caffè Lena', a 3-CD box set, the result of years of investigative research, contains 47 tracks, all released for the very first time, alongside previously unpublished photographs. Images include selections from the archive of esteemed photographer Joe Alper, who captured many iconic, intimate portraits from the folk era of the 1960s.

Born in Viareggio son of art critic and feminist Carla Lonzi. He lived in Milan until 1973. Battista Lena started his guitar and musical studies at an early age with teachers like John Ackermann and Eddy Palermo, then Barney Kessel, Attila Zoller e Gary Burton. He began in 1985 his collaboration with Italian drummer Roberto Gatto, and a few years later with trumpet player Enrico Rava and then Palle Danielsson e Jon Christensen, Daniel and Richard Galliano. In 1997 he directed the project "Banda Sonora" with the Banda B.Somma of Chianciano Terme and Enrico Rava, Gabriele Mirabassi, Gianni Coscia, Enzo Pietropaoli, Marcello Di Leonardo, recording for the French label Label Bleu and winning many European awards (Choc de Musique, Teleramà) in addition to the Unesco Prize for the movie "La strana storia di Banda Sonora" directed by Francesca Archibugi and presented at the 54th Mostra del Cinema di Venezia.

Lena Calhoun Horne was born June 30, 1917, in Brooklyn, New York. In her biography she stated that on the day she was born, her father was in the midst of a card game trying to get money to pay the hospital costs. Her parents divorced while she was still a toddler. Her mother left later in order to find work as an actress and Lena was left in the care of her grandparents. When she was seven her mother returned and the two traveled around the state, which meant that Lena was enrolled in numerous schools (for a time she also attended schools in Florida, Georgia and Ohio). Later she returned to Brooklyn.
