Hervé Niquet lässt Ariane et Bacchus (1696) wieder auferstehen, wobei er zum ersten Mal die exakte Besetzung und Aufstellung des Orchesters der Pariser Oper von 1700 verwendet und uns somit eine historisch informierte Version dieser Tragédie en musique von Marin Marais liefert. Marin Marais wurde 1676 Gambenspieler an der Académie Royale de Musique, als sein Mentor Lully mit seinem Werk Atys dort einen großen Erfolg feierte.

As early as 1761, a year before his masterpiece Orfeo ed Euridice, Gluck largely renewed another musical genre, the ballet, with his adaptation of a work by Molière for Viennese audiences: Don Juan. Another work, Sémiramis, followed a year later. These two works are innovative in that they offer, for the first time, a coherent narrative in which all the resources of the orchestra are put at the service of expressiveness. Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations bring out all the nuances of these scores, reminding us that a quarter of a century before Mozart, the stages of Europe were treated to all the evocative power of music by another outstanding figure: Christoph Willibald Gluck.

Fritz Busch was one the greatest German conductors of the first half of the twentieth century, noted for his illuminating performances and his ethical principles. His father was a former itinerant musician who became an instrument maker, and his brothers were violinist Adolf Busch and cellist Hermann Busch. Fritz Busch went to Cologne Conservatory in 1909, studying conducting with Steinbach. The city of Aachen hired him as music director in 1912. He served there until the war began, enlisted, and returned at war's end to conducted the Municipal Opera.

Domenico Cimarosa’s Le astuzie femminili was presented with success at the Teatro dei Fiorentini in Naples on 26 August 1794. The libretto by Giuseppe Palomba is a rewriting of Giovanni Bertati’s Amor rende sagace. Bertati, who succeeded Lorenzo Da Ponte as imperial poet at the Habsburg court in 1790, had furnished this text to Cimarosa for a composition staged in Vienna during the previous year, in the wake of the triumphant success scored by the composer and the librettist with Il matrimonio segreto.
