After Laughter Comes Tears: Complete Stax & Volt Singles + Rarities 1964-65 is a 2012 compilation by American R&b vocalist Wendy Rene. She released years of records but didn't have much success with it until 1993, when hip-hop producer The RZA sampled her song "After Laughter (Comes Tears)" as part of a song by his group, the Wu-Tang Clan, originally called "After The Laughter Comes Tears" but later made famous as "Tearz". Due to the songs used by The RZA, it became unofficially known as Shaolin Soul in reference to Shaolin being the nickname of the borough where they called home, Staten Island, New York. This represents songs that fans missed when they were originally released, including a few by a group she was with, The Drapels. It was released by Light In The Attic.

For more than 20 years, Light in the Attic has shined a spotlight on some of music’s most unique – and often forgotten – voices. But reviving these long-out-of-print recordings is only half of the process. “We believe that an essential component of archival work, aside from simply honoring the music, is to seek ways in which to bring fresh perspectives, context, and reverence to the original artists and their work,” says LITA Founder and Co-Owner, Matt Sullivan.

The one astounding studio album of proto punk/abrasive psych genius from the Monks – a true masterpiece if their ever was one, a record that's been ripped off by myriad more famous groups in both the mainstream and rock underground of the past 40 years! The group's status as discharged G.I.'s informs some of spewed vitriol, but beyond that there's little connection to any trends or scenes, the Monks are true originals in a world of imitators, and that adds a layer of excitement to an already mind blowing listen.

The Monks started life as five American GIs stationed in Germany, playing beat music together during downtime. After their discharge Gary Burger, Larry Clark, Dave Day, Eddie Shaw and Roger Johnston formed The Torquays, a band that only morphed into The Monks after a bit of conceptualising, stipulating that the group should become the "anti-Beatles", wearing robes and nooses around their necks (stealing the theatrical thunder from SunnO))) by forty years or so).

With her marriage on the rocks and looking for a fresh start, Carole King moved to Los Angeles in 1967. More specifically, Laurel Canyon, where she fell in with the nascent singer/songwriter crowd. She and bassist/boyfriend Charles Larkey (formerly of the Myddle Class, a band she and then-husband Gerry Goffin had signed to their record label) soon formed a band, adding old friend from NYC, guitarist Danny Kortchmar. The trio spent time at King's house working on a batch of songs she had written with Goffin (some previously released by other acts, some not), plus some co-written by another member of Myddle Class, Don Palmer, and fellow Brill Building refugee Toni Stern. Thanks to their industry connections it wasn't long before they had a record deal.
