Since Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell album is vastly better than its follow-ups, Dead Ringer and Midnight at the Lost and Found, the idea of doing a hits compilation culling familiar tracks from the three albums is not really a good one. But the second and third albums did feature U.K. hits, and Hits does contain the four key tracks from Bat – the title track, "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad," "You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth," and "Paradise by the Dashboard Light." A few tracks from Dead Ringer, notably "Read 'Em and Weep" and "I'm Gonna Love Her for Both of Us," are in the same spirit, but the songs from Midnight are simply inferior. ~ AllMusic Review by William Ruhlmann

The 68th edition of the DJ-Kicks mix series is another landmark one, with experimental producer Laurel Halo taking the reins. The American’s adventurous 29 track trip features seven exclusives, including two of her own plus those from Rrose, Machinewoman, FIT Siegel, Nick León and Ikonika. An electronic outlier, Halo hails from Ann Arbor, Michigan, but has been based in Berlin for a number of years. Landing on labels like Hyperdub, Honest Jon’s and Latency, Halo has released a body of work ranging in style, yet cohered by production and compositional tendencies that sound distinctly her own. Her studio work tends to be a multi-layered mix of the electronic and the acoustic, the organic and the synthetic. As a DJ, meanwhile, she lays down more floor-focussed mixes of techno, bass and worldly drum rhythms, and her live sets are similarly visceral and direct.

A fantastic recording of a fantastic show. Just buy it. This is the show the critics wanted to trash, but couldn't. The show that many wanted to liken to "We Will Rock You", but couldn't. Bat Out Of Hell was quite simply the musical theatre event of 2017, and left the critics in bemused raptures with four and five star reviews, and audiences on their feet. The CD is great, but to capture the sheer scale and bombast of the show requires you to go and see it. It comes back to London in 2018, and I for one will be going again - for sheer escapism, scale, sound and theatricality, no musical touched Bat Out Of Hell in 2017. The producers were brave and bold, they stuck to their guns, they believed in their work, and they have reaped the rewards. This show deserves to be recognised for its sheer audacity in shaking the London Coliseum into this century! There are no words to describe Andrew Polec or Christina Bennington as the astonishingly brilliant leads.
