Earth, Wind & Fire were one of the most musically accomplished, critically acclaimed, and commercially popular funk bands of the '70s. Conceived by drummer, bandleader, songwriter, kalimba player, and occasional vocalist Maurice White, EWF's all-encompassing musical vision used funk as its foundation, but also incorporated jazz, smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock & roll, psychedelia, blues, folk, African music, and, later on, disco. Lead singer Philip Bailey gave EWF an extra dimension with his talent for crooning sentimental ballads in addition to funk workouts; behind him, the band could harmonize like a smooth Motown group, work a simmering groove like the J.B.'s, and improvise like a jazz fusion outfit.

In March 2016, British indie singer-songwriter Billy Bragg and his American counterpart Joe Henry boarded a Los Angeles-bound train at Chicago’s Union Station, guitars in hand, looking to reconnect with the culture of American railroad travel and the music it inspired. Open Our Eyes is the fifth album by Earth, Wind & Fire. Released in 1974, this was the album that was the beginning of where the group would go next, featuring their first certified hit song, "Mighty Mighty". The album also includes "Kalimba Story", "Devotion", and "Fair But So Uncool". The 2001 remaster for Columbia Legacy features a few unreleased songs not on the original album. The MP3 version has an additional interlude recorded for the album but not released until it was placed on The Eternal Dance box set.
