Released in 1971, GET CARTER all but defined a new breed of gritty British gangster film, portraying career criminals in a more brutal yet three-dimensional fashion (a style later adopted to great effect by TV series The Sweeney). Directed by Mike Hodges and starring Michael Caine, the film has grown in stature over the years - fuelled in great part by the amazing soundtrack by British jazz maestro Roy Budd. From the opening bars of the 'Get Carter' theme, the music underpins the tense drama, endorsing an atmosphere which was both thoroughly British while also reflecting the more sophisticated urban landscapes portrayed in ground-breaking US films like The French Connection.

Opus Dei, the band’s first album for Mute, was mixed by Rico Conning (Wire, Pere Ubu, Swans, William Orbit) and the band’s classic Laibachian interpretations of Opus’ ‘Live Is Life’ (here presented in English as ‘Opus Dei’ and in German as ‘Leben heisst Leben’) and Queen’s ‘One Vision’ (reworked as ‘Geburt Einer Nation’) soon saw them emerge from the shadows as they garnered support from the likes of MTV and ITV’s The Chart Show. This mainstream spotlight, coupled with memorable features in the music press, opened up opportunities for the Slovenian collective that included their first world tour. Performances from the tour from London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, San Francisco, Berlin, Paris and “somewhere in Europe” make up the second CD of the expanded remastered edition.

The Las Vegas Story was possibly the most complete and unrushed Gun Club LP. Produced by Jeff Eyrich, this LP saw the band experiment more with covering show tunes like Gershwin's 'My Man's Gone Now' and a killer take on Pharaoh Sanders' 'The Creator Has A Master Plan'. Yet another raved about LP in the press, The Las Vegas Story was the icing on the cake in the Gun Clubs early carrier. This release features the album in all its glory plus a bonus CD featuring a complete live show of the band from 1984. Cooking Vinyl. 2009.

China Crisis main men Gary Daly and Eddie Lundon were great songwriters searching for that one song that would make a difference. "Working with Fire and Steel" was that song. Although they had hits before, and they would have hits after, no other song defined China Crisis' essence more. With its percolating beat, Daly's hiccupping vocals, and a smashing chorus, it was the perfect modern pop song. With that said, there was also so much more to China Crisis than that one song. This, their sophomore album, features songs cut from the same cloth as "…Fire and Steel," including "Animals in Jungles" and "Hanna Hanna," but also reveals a band with deeper meaning and ambitious ideas…

Like fellow Liverpudlians O.M.D., China Crisis began life as a synthetic duo who performed brilliantly executed pop songs with quirky edges. And like O.M.D., they seamlessly mixed their love of guitar-based pop with (then) modern musical technology (i.e., synthesizers). Unlike O.M.D., China Crisis' legacy languishes somewhere between there and then with no sign of them ever being considered "hip." Not to say that that is their fault!
