Évidemment, c’est faire preuve d’une solide dose de hardiesse que d’entourer la Sonate pour violon et piano de Poulenc, écrite en 1943 à la mémoire de García Lorca, de trois Sonates de Mozart composées en 1778 et 1779 ! D’autant que la Sonate de Poulenc n’est pas toujours très bien considérée, à commencer par Poulenc lui-même qui écrivait dans ses mémoires « Comme j'ai de la peine à témoigner, musicalement, de ma passion pour Lorca, ma Sonate pour piano et violon, dédiée à sa mémoire, n'est hélas pas du meilleur Poulenc », mais est-on toujours le meilleur juge de ses propres œuvres ?

The Violin Sonatas and Partitas manuscript, which has fortunately survived, is dated 1720. The first page of the autograph carries the note “Libro Primo”; Bach’s Cello Suites BWV 1007-1012 may have been regarded as the “Libro Secondo”. A dedicatee is not known. Johann Sebastian Bach composed his Violin Sonatas and Partitas/ when he was employed as Kapellmeister in Köthen (1717-1723) and probably completed the cycle in 1720. There is hardly any other work in the entire violin literature with such significance. Bach set new standards in playing and composition; these works have lost none of their topicality and brilliance to this day.

'This violin originates from Mozart s estate and Mozart always played it. I bought it from Mozart s widow', noted publisher and composer Johann Anton André around 1840. And in a diary entry by William Hill written on 11 Nov. 1909 he noted: 'Dr. Henkel, who wants to sell his Violin by Petrus della Costa, has sent me the history of the fiddle, it is as follows. His father bought the violin from Hofrath Anton André of Offenbach about 1840 since which time it has been in the family.
