It could be argued that performances of the first and best known of Liszt’s Mephisto Waltzes by itself are missing half the story, and possibly the more interesting half. Liszt intended the Two Episodes from Lenau’s Faust as a diptych, and was none too pleased when his commercially minded publisher uncoupled them. Kit Armstrong’s interesting new recording handsomely demonstrates the startlingly rich context given to the Mephisto Waltz when heard after the multi-dimensional Procession by Night. The Procession here is atmospheric and, in the section built on the ‘Pange lingua’chant, affecting in its yearning. Imaginative articulation, pedalling and dynamics conspire to produce that rarity, a Mephisto Waltz that is genuinely original while remaining true to the score. The Second and Third Mephisto Waltzes are well paced and full of ideas, though without quite achieving the abandon of the First.

This album features works by composers for whom the conception and creation of music was intimately bound up with a religious attitude towards the world. Before the birth of aesthetics in the 18th century, the symbolic or “external” meanings of music resided in the music itself; neither its expressiveness nor its purpose as an integral part of social and religious rituals were separated from a larger context of moral and spiritual considerations. In this sense, although their tonal languages and forms differ greatly, later composers such as Liszt, Franck and Messiaen followed the spirit of Bach, reflecting a musical philosophy in which musical means and theological ends were deeply intertwined, if not one and the same.

Chonguri is the name of the traditional long neck lute from Georgia which inspired Georgian composer and cellist Sulkhan Tsinzadze to write an atmospheric all-pizzicato piece. Its exotic plucked sound marks the eastern starting point of a journey that alights on many European places before finishing off with an equally evocative scene from New York composed by Demenga himself. The Swiss cellist revitalizes the 19th century practice of arranging diverse music for one's own instrument, thus adopting two Chopin Nocturnes and four Bach Chorales (in Demenga's own transcriptions) for this CD recital. Demenga's panorama of poetic miniatures, with Webern's two sets of Kleine Stücke at its centre, features a mix of popular and more abstract musical idioms, blending humour and nostalgia in an entertaining programme.

With his debut CD, Tobias Haunhorst, a philosopher among pianists, presents a concept album that places three one-movement works in a new, informative context. The young pianist combines Schubert's famous Wanderer Fantasy and Liszt's great B minor Sonata with Stefan Heucke's 2nd Piano Sonata, inspired by both composers and written in 2015.

The wedding in 1568 of Renate of Lorraine to Wilhelm V, heir to the throne of the Duke of Bavaria, was a sumptuous, 18-day spectacular designed to rival those of the Italian courts. Orlande de Lassus had been the court’s maestro di cappella since 1556. Using an eye-witness account of the event, Ensemble Origo presents a hypothetical reconstruction of some of his musical contributions – a Te Deum, the moresca (a genre related to the villanella), and an improvised comedy – thereby shedding light on some of the various meanings that the music had for its 16th-century listeners.
