Mercury Records was founded in 1945 and originally only signed black artists. By 1962, the year of our compilation, they had recruited a host of new artists of all hues which made Mercury the dominant force in jazz, blues, rock 'n' roll and pop in the US. These artists included Little Richard, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Jivin' Gene, Clyde McPhatter, Charles Aznavour, Quincy Jones, Patti Page, Ray Stevens and many more.

Johnny Kidd had no album release during during his band's existence (but almost did), and then one solitary UK compilation in the dozen years following his death. Yet he and his groups were not entirely forgotten. In fact after the 1976 tribute events, and after re-formed Pirates blew away most of the live competition that same year, interest in their late leader continued to gain pace. Johnny Kidd is now rightly recognised as a pioneer of British Rock, a true original. His standing seems reflected in the increase of rate of LP, then CD releases. The peak was the "Complete" collection in 1992 which rounded up all known recordings that were available, many mastered for the first time plus a few new stereo remixes into the bargain.

Kai Hansen formed Helloween in 1984, playing guitar and singing on the speed metal band's first four albums. He left in early 1989, however, and founded Gamma Ray with vocalist Ralf Scheepers (formerly with Tyran Pace). The duo intended to record a one-off project that Hansen originated while in Helloween, so they recruited bassist Uwe Wessel, drummer Matthias Burchardt, and several other musicians…

This is where fans of the group can sort of stop and settle down at last. MCA Records had previously let the Mamas & the Papas' music out on CD in a trickle; the debut LP was upgraded and a compilation of remastered hits showed later in the decade, but the rest was left to languish. This two-CD set makes up for that neglect, assembling all four of the quartet's '60s albums on two CDs and augmenting them with the mono single versions of "I Saw Her Again," "Words of Love," and "Creeque Alley," plus the non-LP single "Glad to Be Unhappy." One just wants to luxuriate in the sound of this reissue and its little details, like the rhythm guitar on "Do You Want to Dance" that cuts right through the air, the string basses on "Go Where You Want to Go" that sound like they're just across the room, and the rest of the first album. The real keys to the value of this set, however, are the second and third LPs by the group, superb albums which were either never reissued on CD at all or never upgraded from the mid- to late '80s.

Southern Rock, Blues-Rock, Psychedelic Rock

Sweathog was a San Francisco-based quartet whose sound was fairly far removed from the music normally associated with that city. They were a powerful ensemble instrumentally, keyboardist/singer Lenny Lee (aka Lenny Lee Goldsmith), guitarist/singer Bob Jones, bassist/singer Dave Johnson, and drummer Frosty (aka Barry Smith, aka Bartholomew Smith) all top players in their field – Frosty had played with Lee Michaels on his third and fourth albums, while Jones had played on Harvey Mandel's Cristo Redentor and Righteous in the late '60s, and Goldsmith was an ex-member of the Five Americans. They were not bad as singers, either, with Goldsmith handling the leads. Their music was a mix of Southern-style soul, early-'70s funk, and blues, all wrapped around a virtuoso rock sound.

The tenor sax was to Rhythm & Blues-hits of the 40s and 50s, what the guitar went on to become to RocknRoll. Put on an R&B-single from that era and you will most likely hear a tenor sax break or solo. Eventually, the tenor players stepped out to make records under their own name. These Soul Tenors were expressing themselves by honkin, shoutin, riffin, riding high on a single note or barking out a guttural howl, as Ted Gioia described it in The History of Jazz, all the while, carrying the moan in their tone, according to Cannonball Adderley…
