I became acquainted to Joe Fonda’s musical creativity in 1998, precisely on November 6th at a concert of the Fonda/Stevens Group at Bunker Ulmenwall in Bielefeld, Germany. Along with some friends, I was curating the club‘s jazz program since 1996 at that time. After the enthralling show in 1998 Joe was a frequent artist at our club as his music was immensely inspiring - full of enthusiasm and playfulness. On November 8th 2003 there was Satoko Fujii Quartet playing a show in Bielefeld. On this evening an enduring friendship with Satoko Fujii and Natsuki Tamura began to develop. I go to know two wonderful artists as well as human beings and – what I did not know at that time – two of the most thrilling and versatile musicians in the jazz scene.

Nelson Goerner is not especially known for his Brahms, and this 2018 Alpha release of the Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major marks his first commercial recording of a major Brahms work. While he is widely viewed as a poet at the piano, mostly because of his introspective playing of solo piano music by Chopin and Debussy, Goerner's close-to-the-vest approach may be viewed as a liability in such a heroic and powerful work as this concerto, where assertive playing is required and pianists are expected to demonstrate muscular prowess over poetry.

The Rite of Spring is a ballet and orchestral concert work by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. It was written for the 1913 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company; the original choreography was by Vaslav Nijinsky with stage designs and costumes by Nicholas Roerich. When first performed at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées on 29 May 1913, the avant-garde nature of the music and choreography caused a sensation. Many have called the first-night reaction a "riot" or "near-riot", though this wording did not come about until reviews of later performances in 1924, over a decade later. Although designed as a work for the stage, with specific passages accompanying characters and action, the music achieved equal if not greater recognition as a concert piece and is widely considered to be one of the most influential musical works of the 20th century.

Controversy has surrounded Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 6 in A minor, "Tragic," ever since he reversed the order of the inner movements, from what he originally published as Scherzo/Andante, to Andante/Scherzo, which became his actual practice. Whether one favors the former or the latter ordering may be a moot point, with a century of recordings of both versions indicating the general acceptance by audiences in either form. Paavo Järvi and the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo use the originally published sequence, also adopted by the 1963 critical edition, and deliver the symphony with high energy and force, reflecting the driven march of the opening Allegro energico.

Two CDs. Japan was an English new wave band formed in London in 1974 by David Sylvian (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Steve Jansen (drums), Richard Barbieri (keyboards) and Mick Karn (bass guitar). They started out as a glam rock-inspired band but developed their sound to incorporate electronic music and art rock influences, eventually becoming an influence on the 1980s New Romantic scene in the UK, although the band themselves were not a part of it. This set was recorded at The Budokan, Tokyo in December 1982 and was their fifth from last show on that tour. The band had become friends with Yellow Magic Orchestra who joined them on some of the performances here - "Bamboo Music" is a duet featuring Akiko Yano, and "Taking Islands In Africa" features Yukihiro Takahashi. Ryuichi Sakamoto also plays on those tracks.

The Chihiro Yamanaka album, Somethin' Blue, is her Blue Note Records debut. Ms. Yamanaka, who most often performs and records in trio format, assembled a sextet for these sessions and created a new compositional universe that places Somethin’ Blue in the lineage of classic Blue Note recordings. Chihiro Yamanaka’s music pivots between her strikingly original compositions and her unique arrangements in which she accomplishes the impressive feat of introducing the element of surprise into some of the most famous songs in the jazz repertoire, contemporary popular music, and even the works of classical composers.
