For Eels fans, and especially those obsessed with Mark Oliver Everett, the man who created and fronts the ever-changing lineup as well as writing its songs, 2008 kicked off anything but quietly. Despite a mere six studio and one live record in the band's catalog, E and Universal/Geffen have issued what amounts to a truckload of backlog material on two separate – some would say excessive – releases: Meet the Eels: Essential Eels 1996-2006, Vol. 1, a CD/DVD package, and Useless Trinkets: B-Sides, Soundtracks, Rarities, and Unreleased 1996-2006. The latter includes two discs of music and a live DVD documenting the band's 2006 Lollapalooza performance.

Los Lobos spent years playing parties, wedding receptions, restaurants, bars, and anyplace else where someone might pay them for a gig before landing a deal with Slash Records, and their first full-length album for the label, How Will the Wolf Survive?, is the work of a band that had learned how to play something for everyone while still maintaining their own musical personality in the process. How Will the Wolf Survive? swings back and forth from straight-ahead rock ("Don't Worry Baby") and potent R&B grooves ("I Got Loaded") to country-accented blues ballads ("A Matter of Time") and Mexican traditional numbers ("Serenata Nortena"), with the band's exemplary taste, musical smarts, and road-tested maturity in evidence on every cut.

Violinist Jenny Scheinman's instrumental companion recording to her eponymously titled vocal-emphasized effort of the same time period in 2008 is both an opposite reaction to pop styles and an extension of orchestral music with modern-day twists and turns. It reflects her time working with electric guitarist Bill Frisell, who appears on this date, and also gives a bigger picture of her classical influences via a huge string ensemble, while hinting at the modern creative jazz where her violin voicings take a firmer grip at the core.

Any musician with big enough malt balls to call himself Chocolate Genius is worth checking out. Marc Anthony Thompson (a.k.a. Chocolate Genius) admits that he's a sucker for a pun. Which brings us to his release, Black Music. Black Music refers to the dark, desolate nature of his songs (dark chocolate if you must). "If the songs were all fast, I'd probably call it Race Music," he jokes. And Chocolate Genius? To my dismay it's neither a porn nom de plume nor nineties blaxploitation. Thompson calls Chocolate Genius a groove rather than a group. It's a name shared by whomever is in the room while the music is being made. I suppose the guy who delivers pizza to the studio and the fly on the wall share in the Chocolate G. Popular New York City acidic jazz musicians John Medeski and Chris Wood dipped their talents into the chocolate as well.
