This is a compilation made in response to legendary producer Quincy Jones complaining about the hatred from online fans towards his new album, Q: Soul Bossa Nostra, where he used the talents of various modern day rappers and singers to do songs using his older material. They were either direct cover versions or songs utilizing his samples. Here is the actual comment: "Today with Facebook and Twitter and everything, I have never seen so many haters in my life. But it’s people sitting in their basements with their pants on the ground, just being haters. I don’t get it, man. That means they don’t have a life.” Maybe it is Q: Soul Bossa Nostra which does not have life. No Hater Soul: Quincy Jones Samples Preferred features a selection of songs in hip-hop's musical history that either sampled some of Quincy Jones' classics, or used songs that were written or produced by Q. This is a more appropriate tribute to Q's talents than Q: Soul Bossa Nostra is. Without hate, this is No Hater Soul, definitely Preferred.

Packaging-wise and title-wise, the Rhino label's Hip Hop: The Collection is as generic as they come, but after that, all complaints are minimal. Get it at the right price, and it doesn't even matter that the theme is mega-broad and that the T.I. hit isn't one everyone knows, because when a collection goes from Afrika Bambaataa's seminal electro-rap "Planet Rock… Don't Stop" to Missy Elliot's "Get Ur Freak On" with barely any filler in the middle, the freak is on and the planet is certainly rocked. The set jumps time periods at will, and yet the sequencing works, so consider it a time capsule or a portable party, because it's both.

'The Nature' represents an antipodean landscape of Australian voices. A melting pot of sultry depictions, deep embraces from beyond and reflections locked in the groove. The landscape vast, the influences many, but the common ground being a unity exemplified by the soul. DRMNGNOW opens things up with some food for thought in the form of ‘Australia Does Not Exist’ featuring Adrian Eagle. Natalie Slade follows with haunting ‘Humidity’ produced by Simon Mavin from Hiatus Kaiyote. Representing Adelaide, Eliza Dickson touches on the topic of ‘Gold’, outlining her artistic journey and the struggles of expression every artist faces. Ruru then effortlessly glides over Lord Finesse style production from Funkwig on ‘Ether’, an introspective outer space journey looking deep into the soul, followed by Inkswel's tropical mix of 'The Master Plan' from Melbourne Hip Hop duo Man Made Mountain.

Label: Motown (USA) | Cat.# 3746354922 | Released: 1991-05-14

Motown's "The Best of Thelma Houston" covers her late-'70s/early-'80s output for the label, including her hit cover of "Don't Leave Me This Way." A few other covers, including "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Me and Bobby McGee," hint at Houston's range as an interpreter; originals like "If It's the Last Thing I Do," "I Want to Go Back There Again," and "Stealin' in the Name of the Lord" show her finesse with lush ballads, quintessential Motown, and gospel-inflected pop, respectively. Along with "Don't Leave Me This Way," tracks such as "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning," "Love Machine," and "I'm Here Again" reflect Houston's sophisticated but fiery take on disco. While the Spectrum collection has a slightly grittier edge to it, this compilation does a fine job of showing the breadth and depth of her Motown work.
