Loving Any Light

"Journey To The Light" is the second album by the Detroit, Michigan R&B group Brainstorm. Released in 1978 on the Tabu Records label. Produced by Jerry Peters.

Unlike almost any of their peers, Pink Floyd played to both sides of the aisle: they were rooted in the blues but their heart belonged to the future, a dichotomy that made them a quintessentially modern 20th century band. That blues influence, quickly sublimated and only surfacing on the occasional Gilmour guitar solo, was the foundation for the band's very name, as the group decided to splice the names of two old bluesmen – Pink Anderson and Floyd Council – as a tribute to the American music they loved so. These members of the early Floyd – guitarist/singer Syd Barrett, bassist Roger Waters, keyboardist Rick Wright, and drummer Nick Mason – were all architecture students at London Polytechnic, with the exception of Barrett, who was an art student and a friend of Waters since childhood. This version of the band started gigging regularly in 1965, with Barrett becoming the group's lead singer quite quickly. During this time, the group relied on blues and R&B covers, not unlike many of their British peers, but they wound up extending the time of their sets through extended instrumental jams, planting the seeds of space rock that would come to fruition not much later. During 1966, the group's increasingly adventurous sets became something of a sensation in the London underground, leading to a contract with EMI early in 1967.

This three-disc budget-priced (and packaged) set of material from Yorkshire-based pop/rock outfit Smokie may appeal more to European listeners than the U.S market, where the band never managed to climb high enough chart-wise to develop the kind of following that similarly themed acts like America, the Hollies, and Bread did. They did, however, land an impressive number of U.K. hits, including "If You Think You Know How to Love Me," "Don't Play Your Rock 'n' Roll to Me," "Living Next Door to Alice," "It's Your Life," and "Oh Carol," all of which appear here. That said, 52 tracks is more Smokie than any listener has the right to inhale, making the more streamlined collections like Paradiso's The Best of Smokie and BMG International's With Love from…Smokie: The Best of the Ballads better bets for the casual fan.

Smokie Originally formed in Yorkshire, England in 1966, Smokie hit the British pop charts several times during the late '70s with updated psychedelic pop, influenced by the band's stay on Mickie Most's Rak Records as well as the writers of most of the band's hit material, Rak's Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. Vocalist Chris Norman, bassist Terry Utley, guitarist Alan Silson, and drummer Ron Kelly had played in the Elizabethans, but formed the band Kindness in 1970. The quartet recorded many singles during the late '60s and early '70s, but failed to show any chart activity. By 1973,

Design went on to become the most televised group in the UK in the 1970’s appearing on more than fifty TV shows with major stars such as Morecambe and Wise, Benny Hill, Tommy Cooper and The Two Ronnies.
