Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was a member of the young Russian school formed by The Mighty Handful along with Balakirev, César Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, and Alexander Borodin. Although his songs are not very frequently performed, his songs with piano accompaniment or, as the master himself termed them, the Romances, are a substantial element of his overall oeuvre. Rimsky-Korsakovs song artistry is first and foremost a musical one. In the miniaturistic formats of his romances he fundamentally endeavored to interrelate the poetic statement and vocal interpretation.

Romana, inizia la sua carriera come solista nel 1995, grazie alla pubblicazione di due fortunati singoli, "Sola" e "Noi". Nel 1996 arriva la prima partecipazione a Sanremo con "Al di là di questi anni", brano che riscuote un grande successo e le permette di vincere il Premio della Critica.
L'album d'esordio dell'artista, MARINA REI, dopo l'apparizione sanremese viene ripubblicato con l'aggiunta del brano proposto al Festival, del remix di "I sogni dell'anima" a cura del celebre Todd Terry - collaboratore, tra gli altri, di Everything But The Girl, Janet Jackson, Madonna e k.d. lang - e della toccante versione in italiano ("… E il paradiso verrà") di un classico del soul di Philadelphia, "If you don't know me by now", grande hit internazionale del 1972 per Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes.
