The bulk of the critical acclaim that surrounds U.K. post-punk band Warmduscher unsurprisingly has to do with their particularly wild and memorable live show. Bottling that unhinged energy on record has felt like an untenable task but their fifth album, Too Cold to Hold, gets us closer. A psychedelic monologue by writer Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting, Filth) precedes the first song, "Fashion Week," a Mark E. Smith-style vocal-forward track propelled by punk-funk drum fills and vibes. It's sort of Magazine meets Roy Ayers, continuing at a frenzied pace until dramatically swinging into a noise-laden third act where the Warmduscher display their DEVO-weirdness.

They were among the progenitors of the progressive rock movement of the 1970s as well as the jam-band scene that arose in the late 1990s. Their sound travelled well to the States, where they enjoyed Top 40 success with “A Tab in the Ocean” (1972) and “Remember the Future” (1973). Nearly 20 albums and a half-century later, the band’s artistic and personal charisma has earned them masses of devoted fans. As they began the next 50 years of their career, they kicked it off earlier this year with “Journey to the Other Side – Live at The Dunellen Theatre June 10, 2023”.

In a testament to Ireland’s vibrant musical history, Allchival presents an anthology celebrating the disco era’s hidden gems from Stuart Bingham's Sunshine. Culled from the annals of his studio recordings, this collection shines a light on the country’s lesser-known contributions to the global disco phenomenon. Kicking off the compilation with Sunshine's electrifying "Boogie on Up," a testament to the band's prowess in embracing disco rhythms despite their pop cover origins. Produced by the acclaimed Paul Curtis, the track embodies the infectious spirit of disco, marking a pivotal moment for Irish disco hits. Accompanying it is "Don't Stop Me," radiating with Euro-disco vibes, further exemplifying Sunshine's versatility. Bingham recounts the bittersweet journey of "If This Is Free." Initially slated for success under Curtis's wing, the disco era's abrupt demise altered its trajectory, leading to an independent recording that retains a raw, garagey edge reminiscent of the era's ethos.

With over 60,000 recordings to his name, Scientist (born Hopeton Overton Brown) is one of the most influential figures in dub. From Studio One to King Tubby’s, Channel One to Tuff Gong, he worked at Kingston’s premier studios, pioneering recording techniques and elevating the dub mix into an art form in his own right. Known as the ‘Dub Chemist’ for both his technical expertise and forward-thinking ideas, Scientist’s Night Dreamer session brings together musicians from across the London reggae scene, including The Instigators’ rhythm section Mafia (bass) and Fluxy (drums), Creation Rebel guitarist Tony Ruffcut, vocalist Donovan Kingjay, Jah Shaka keyboardist Greg Assing and saxophonist Finn Peters.

Gus Dudgeon is rated as one of the greatest British producers of all time; his work is in millions of homes across the world. Starting out as an engineer, he got to produce the Zombies classic ‘She’s Not There’ in 1964 when the allotted producer popped out for refreshments. There followed an eclectic ride through the 60s as a fully-fledged producer working with acts as diverse as John Mayall and Eric Clapton’s Bluesbreakers, the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Ralph McTell (he persuaded Ralph to record the original ‘Streets Of London’ when it wasn’t included in a forthcoming session), David Bowie’s first hit, prog rockers Audience and psychedelic act the Locomotive.

The Story So Far have been around for a long time. Like all bands of similar longevity, they've grown up – and so has their sound. A slight shift has certainly occurred on fifth album I Want To Disappear, though it isn’t any less enthralling. It’s been six years since we last got a studio album from the pop-punk quartet, and as the band have moved out of their 20s and into their 30s, their energetic sonic identity feels a tad more sophisticated.
