Following his stint as leader of the Electric Light Orchestra, singer/guitarist Jeff Lynne forged an equally successful career in the '80s and '90s as a producer with his distinctive sound gracing the latter-day records of many veteran rock & roll legends. Lynne began his career in the late '60s as the frontman of a group called the Idle Race, which recorded the album The Birthday Party for RCA in 1969. In 1970, Lynne accepted an invitation from Move leader Roy Wood to join his revamped band; the two shared a vision of fusing electric rock & roll with classical orchestrations, a concept that eventually transformed the Move into the Electric Light Orchestra (instead of the two groups running concurrently, as had originally been planned).

When Jeff Lynne was growing up, he listened to music on longwave radio, soaking up all the sounds coming through the big radio in the living room. His 2012 tribute to these days, appropriately called Long Wave, is a far-reaching salute to the glory days of pop in the years before the Beatles…

PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED RADIO SESSIONS FROM THE CLASSIC IDLE RACE LINE-UP Formed from the ashes of Birmingham s Nightriders (formerly featuring Roy Wood) The Idle Race were christened sometime in early 1967. Well received by the music press for their melodies, whimsical lyrics, and inventive production, the band were championed too by DJs John Peel and Kenny Everett, but despite critical respect and famous admirers such as The Beatles and Marc Bolan, Idle Race failed to catch fire with the public. They did however release two classic albums and a raft of superb singles on Liberty while Jeff Lynne was a member, and a further LP in 1971 after he had left (ironically, to join Roy Wood in the Electric Light Orchestra.) The Idle race also recorded many radio sessions for John Peel s Top Gear programme on the newly formed Radio One, and this CD features seven such sessions recorded between 1967 and 1969. Including alternative versions of many of the group s most famous songs, plus a few cover versions (such as Marc Bolan s Debra and Frantic Desolation , originally composed and recorded by San Francisco s Sopwith Camel), the 19 tracks included form a quite extraordinary rarities collection of this oft-forgotten late-1960s act. Released here for the first time, this compilation will prove a delight for fans of Idle Race, of Jeff Lynne and of classic 1960s Beatlesque pop music in general.

Alessandro Scarlatti wrote over 600 cantatas, two of which are on this 1987 disc performed by soprano Lynne Dawson and the Purcell Quartet: Correa nel seno amato and Già lusingato appieno. He wrote considerably less keyboard music – and next to nothing compared with the gargantuan achievement of his son Domenico – one of which is on this disc performed by Robert Woolley, the harpsichordist of the Purcell Quartet: the Variations on La Folia. With the chamber cantatas flanking the keyboard variations, this disc is a wonderful program of the elder Scarlatti's art. Though there are some who might argue English soprano Dawson is perhaps too reserved for this repertoire, none would argue that she doesn't have a clear voice and a supple technique. And while there are others who might argue the Purcell Quartet is perhaps too stringent for the repertoire, none would argue they don't play together with consummate ease and they don't accompany Dawson with brilliant mastery. But there are few who would disparage Woolley's blindingly virtuosic and blazingly demonic La Folia Variations.

Grammy-winning Alabama singer-songwriter Shelby Lynne has given fans a taste of her “most revealing album to date,” due out in April. The self-titled project, her first solo album since 2015, will be released April 17, according to an announcement made Tuesday morning. Many of the songs on it come from an unreleased independent film by lyricist/director/screenwriter Cynthia Mort titled “When We Kill the Creators,” in which Lynne stars as “a deeply conflicted artist struggling at the intersection of art and commerce.”

Jeff Lynne revived Electric Light Orchestra in 2015 – due to legal reasons, they were now called Jeff Lynne's ELO – releasing a comeback album called Alone in the Universe and steadily mounting a return to the road. Several dates happened in 2016, but the tour reached its apex in June 2017, when the group played in front of 60,000 people at London's Wembley Stadium. Released five months after that June 24 gig, Wembley or Bust – which was accompanied by a concert film – features the entirety of the gig, and if it's not heard too closely, it could sometimes be mistaken for an ELO greatest-hits album.

The Definitive Collection Review by Mark Deming
Shelby Lynne started her career as a promising mainstream country singer and today she's a critically respected and genre-defying singer/songwriter; charting the trajectory of her career isn't a simple matter, and Lynne's installment in Hip-O's The Definitive Collection isn't entirely successful in doing so, though it's still an admirably thorough look at her work to date. The Definitive Collection starts out with five tunes from Lynne's years with Epic and Morgan Creek, and on these songs one can almost hear the strain as she struggles against the cookie-cutter production and cut-rate songwriting that Nashville was foisting upon her, though the strength of her voice and soulful touch of her phrasing still shines through. Seven of the ten songs from 2000's I Am Shelby Lynne follow, and the difference is like night and day – not only is the production far more imaginative and sympathetic, but the songs (all written or co-written by Lynne) are smart, heartfelt, and personal in a way her previous work had never been.

Unlike either its predecessor Alone in the Universe or 2001's Zoom, From out of Nowhere didn't appear after a prolonged period of silence from Jeff Lynne's ELO. It arrived in November of 2019, nearly exactly four years after Alone in the Universe, a rapid turnaround that recalls Lynne's work schedule as a bandleader and producer in the 1970s and '80s. That's not the only way From out of Nowhere conjures memories of the past. From the spaceship hovering on its record cover to the song title "Sci-Fi Woman" stirring up the ghost of "Evil Woman," the album is designed to sound and feel like an Electric Light Orchestra album from the late 1970s.

Shelby Lynne has followed her own sometimes reckless, always adventuresome muse throughout her career. Just a Little Lovin' is her personal homage to the late, legendary Dusty Springfield. Nine of its ten cuts are inextricably linked to the late British vocalist whose sway Lynne came under years ago, but a chance conversation with Barry Manilow – of all people – led to the making of this record. Lynne doesn't attempt to sound like Springfield.
