Heras second album for Deutsche Grammophon is the deeply personal result of an existential confrontation of Hera's with the foundation of her being, resulting in her determination to embrace life: "As I contemplated death, I found my soul infused with the magnificence of life. A profound sense of gratitude began to fill my soul." Presenting operatic favourites by Massenet ("Meditation"), Delibes ("Flower Duet" w/ Emily D'Angelo), Humperdinck ("Abends wenn ich schlafen geh") side by side with contemporary works by Luke Howard, Cecilia Livingston, Hyowon Woo and Bernat Vivancos. A spectacular under water shot music video for "While you live" will accompany the album release.
Alto saxophonist Steve Coleman’s Live at the Village Vanguard, Vol. I (The Embedded Sets) is his first live release in over 15 years. It captures his band Five Elements in two joyous sets at the historic New York venue where some of the most famous jazz recording from the likes of John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Bill Evans have been made.
Every one of the six volumes of Café Zimmermann's recordings of Bach's "Concerts avec plusiers instruments" is absolutely excellent. The music is all magnificent and played with a freshness combined with depth of understanding which is a real joy. You may like to know that they have now been issued as a set J.S. Bach: Concertos with Several Instruments Complete Works Vol. I-VI which I recommend in the strongest possible terms.
The chamber cantata flourished in Italy as a counterpart to public opera and oratorio, cultivated by aristocratic patrons for their personal enjoyment. Perhaps because of its essentially private origins, this pervasive Baroque form remains little known today. During his years in Italy (1706-1710), George Frideric Handel composed nearly 100 cantatas for a series of important patrons, but they have tended to be passed over in favor of his larger operas, oratorios, concertos and orchestral suites. The plan of La Risonanza to perform and record all of the cantatas with instrumental accompaniment (about one-third of the total) is therefore of signal importance for all music lovers, as it will bring this extraordinarily beautiful music once again to life (2006-2009).
