Con questo Vol. I d'una Opera Omnia ancora in corso, arriviamo subito alla piena maturità dell'importante musicista finlandese, ma anche forse del Meta4, importante quartetto connazionale: direi che si son fatti un regalo reciproco con questa produzione, ovviamente Ondine. Seppure resta per me sospeso il giudizio se queste possano essere delle interpretazioni di riferimento.
From Melodic Drumming and the Ostinato Vol. I and II. Recorded April 1993 at Rave Video, Burbank, CA. Virtuoso drummer Terry John Bozzio was born on December 27, 1950 to Italian-American parents in San Francisco, California. Terry started playing the drums on makeshift sets at age six. Inspired by the Beatles' famous appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," Bozzio begged his father for drum lessons at age thirteen. He played in the 60s garage rock bands Blue Glass Radio, The Yarde, and Tamalpaias Mountain Boys.
This is a fine alternative to Christopher Hogwood’s period performance on L’Oiseau-Lyre, and will be welcomed heartily by fans of Marilyn Horne. Orlando is a great role, filled with arias and scenes acrobatic, tender, and exclamatory (he goes mad in Act 2 and stays that way for much of Act 3). In l985, when this present set was taped live at Venice’s La Fenice, Marilyn Horne was still in control of her awesome powers–her breath control, fluidity, big, round tones, impeccable diction, and sheer intelligence still astound after all these years. And she’s certainly superior to the nasty-sounding, if dramatic, James Bowman for Hogwood. Lella Cuberli’s Angelica is fine but is outclassed by Arleen Auger; however, I prefer Jeffrey Gall’s countertenor Medoro to Catherine Robbins’ girly one (both for Hogwood again).
Italy's Måneskin make their bid for global pop domination with their third album, 2023's pulse-pounding Rush! While they sound like a sleazy garage rock band from New York circa the early aughts, they are best known for winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 for Italy with the song "Zitti e buoni." Prior to that, they teed up their breakthrough Eurovision run with a second-place finish on Italy's X Factor in 2017. All of which is to say that, while they can really and truly rock (devil horns and all), Måneskin aren't afraid to play in the tasteless, campy machinery of the modern pop landscape. In fact, on Rush! they explicitly frame themselves within a sleazy, globe-trotting world of decadent partying, sexy models, and raw overindulgence – all delivered with a kohl-eyed wink and a firm tongue in cheek.
